| What do you use for scopes on your Number 4 MK1
The title pretty much says it all. I bought a scope mount that replaces the rear sight aperture with no modifications to my Number 4 MK1 .303 rifle. The trouble is so far I have yet to find a scope that has enough elevation adjustment for me to get it zeroed properly. (I haven't checked it in a while but I'm sure it was around 2-3 inches high at fifty yards, after I adjusted the scopes to their limits) I've been through three scopes. All of them were pretty cheap the most expensive was around $90. None of them would ajust low enough. I gave up not wanting to spend a ton of money on another scope and just put the rear sight back on. All of the scopes I bought were variable 9-3x scopes. I've been thinking of giving it another shot but I figured I'd first see what other people were putting on their rifles. Any suggestions would be great. |

Well, the No 4 wasn't meant to be used at 50 yards; I believe the battle sight setting was 300 yards. How high is your scope centred above the bore? Try shooting it at 100 and see where your scope places the shots. Failing that you could try shimming the scope in the rings. (Beer cans make good shims) How does it shoot with the real sights? (I'm not a believer in scoping service rifles anyway!) After thought, how's the wood/barrel fit? No undue pressure being exerted on the barrel by the stock??

A 'no gunsmith' alternative would be the B Square mount which fits onto the rear sight mounting and the ejector screw. This is a fairly high mount but I have used it without any problem at 100 / 200yds with a "big" (20x magnification) scope. I reckon its your mounting thats wrong rather than your scopes. I have a B-Square and ATI mounts on two No4's , as well as a S&K on a No5. I've yet too see a problem even at close range. I found these mounts all sit at about the same height , but the B-Square can still be used with the Mkll 300/600 or Mklll rearsight. The B-Square is more of a cap that fits over the receiver instead of inside the rearsight well like the ATI or S&K. My favorite scopes are Lyman . My Longbranch is married up to a Lyman Alaskan ( dot reticule), Savage with a Lyman All American ( post reticule ) Faz No5 an All American ( standard crosshair)

I've got the b square mount. Its a pretty secure attachment. I had measured fifty yards in my back yard and figured if I could get it sighted in at fifty, then when I took it to the range it would be a few clicks off for a hundred. The Iron sights are great gun is spot on. It shoots great, I love it the problem is the rear sight is huge and not that great for long distance. I've tried using the volley sights but still haven't quite figured them out yet. The wood fairly loose, I don' think its exerting any pressure on the barrel. I'm going to have to remount the scope on the gun to measure how high it sits but its was higher then I had thought it would be. |

| Outstanding. Two questions: Where do you get one, and will it fit an SMLE No.1 MkIII? I strongly suspect mine would perform MUCH better with a scope, but I don't want to drill or tap it or do ANYTHING which might disturb its eligibility for service competition.
