| Enfield No 5 Mk I
I saw one of these at a gun show today for $500 bucks. Looked like a good rifle, but I am not the least bit familar with this type of gun. Tell me what I should know about this model, and if it is worth having. Thanks |

Dont expect it to be a target rifle - the lightening cuts in the receiver have affected the accuracy of the rifle (it was only designed for use in the jungles at +/- 50 yards) Some are pretty good but most will get you to within about 6" at 100yards. Great fun to shoot, with a bit of a kick and awesome in the dusk as the jet of flame shoots out of the front end. There are many so called 'Jungle Carbines' out there which are just cut down / modified No4s - a couple of the dealers in the USA are notorious for these. Rear sight should be marked up to 800yds (not the normal 1200yds for a No4) The bolt handle should be 'hollow' but thats no guarantee as a lot of later No4s were made with hollow bolt handles. Check matching numbers - it doesnt particularly matter about matching number on the magazine - but it would be nice ! If it doesnt say "No5" on the left hand side of the reciever it isnt a No5 Pic shows a No4 at the top and a No5 below - note the 'cut out' behind the charger bridge. ![]() Check out the link for more detailed information on how to recognise a true No5 ENFIELD No.5 JUNGLE CARBINE | |

Prices seem to be running in the 400-600 area for No5's that are in very good condition. As Alan said, watch for fakes. They make a nice brush gun for hunting in heavy woods/brush.

I think if you get the No.5 Jungle Carbine you will really enjoy it. I never had any trouble hitting exactly what I wanted within 100 yds. I never tried farther. This weapon is known to kill at both ends because it weighs much less but uses the same ammo as the older I - IVs, and it kicks like a very large mule. I serendipitously located an original bayonet for $30 in Dallas one year. I probably have only $80. invested in my carbine. After seeing today’s value, I feel pretty good. It makes up for some of the other beatings that I have taken by crafty arms dealers. By-the-way, putting the safety back on after cleaning has always been a challenge to me. * |

I have two. One is an all matching '47Faz which is more of a safe queen and the other is a '44 Faz mismatch in Indian issue stocks with the Ishy screw. The '44 came with a S&K scope mount , Bushnell Sharpshooter scope and glass bedded forestock . I've since bought a DP'd butt stock and added a wood cheekpiece ,and a shorter Ruko 2.5x scope , so , now it's known as my Mini-T. It's a blast to shoot and bang on at 100yd or under . 3" groups @100yd , 2" @ 50yd on the average , using factory 180gr hunting ammo . They're obviously not as accurate as the No4 or SMLE , but they were not ment to be either . The No5 was used for close-quarter combat. Never-the-less , I deer hunt in Ontario , Canada's thick cedar bush and when that Whitetail buck steps out , he's gonna get it.

I really didn't know what I was buying when I bought my Jungle Carbine. It was in a lot of three other rifles I bought for 250 bucks. They included a yugo SKS, Hungarian Mosin M44, and the JC. The JC is not mint but it is a nice little rifle to play around with!

Even with no recoil pad, my "ROF (F)" #5 kicks about like my MN 44s (no pads), but does not hurt. Both my shoulders and chest are skinny. You guys who are not so skinny can handle it, as long as you don't flinch. Just ask Mike '82 at the MN forum. We went to his club months ago. Last edited by Laufer; 07-13-2009 at 09:37 PM. |
