This is '43 British-made and 70's POF. Let's assume that no hands have ever touched this ammo, the '43 is from Samco and the POF is partly from elsewhere. If the first fingerprints contact it today, about how many years before the salt would finally contact the primers etc and reduce the reliability if it continues to be stored in an ammo can (inside)? Would it last at least 3-5 years? |

I would say touching it has no effect. It's reliability is in how it was stored, and how it was made. Good Brit ammo may be 100% 60+ years later, while POF may be 70% stored the same way. If they were subjected to extremes and moisture, reliability drops drastically.

POF is very unreliable to start with.I know hardly anyone who buys it except when, like now, there is nothing else available.

Just as an added thought, I read many years ago that the oils/sweat frin a womans hands would cause more and sooner rust on a gun than that of a man. Something in the hormones if I remember right. It might be true of brass as well.

My grandpa told me something like this too. He worked as a diesel mechanic for UPS for 31 years. He said that on some early mechanical fuel injection systems generally only women assembled them at the factory and that they were not allowed to do so while they were on their period. He said it was something to do with their body chemistry that time of month. Something about screens and small parts becoming corroded I believe. | |

I've known guys who say their touch causes more rusting than other guys. Depends on the person. Like mosquitos are drawn to some folks more than others. Touching the brass and then storing it may cause discoloration of it - but that doesn't affect the primers. Humidity and temperature extremes may well ruin them.

Which is probably WHY it is available, and others aren't.

The whole point of this forum was addressing if I touch ammo is it ruined....you have twisted it around in the side bars..the answer is still no! Touching ammo will not give it the kiss of death. PS this is my 1000th post here.

Might have been at the start, but the question was answered.

Texn/Gandog: No sweat, as I always enjoy comments of all you guys, whether you have much more experience with guns or not. It would not be so interesting if each question only received a simple answer. Also looking forward to any replies about a good MN 44's value on 'that' forum. |
