Ladies and Gents,

New hunter here and am eager for your advice. I am quite familiar with weapons, own and use several, come from a family background of hunting, but just never did it. Kind friends have given me venison no more... time to get my own.

My son is also a new hunter (15) and his grand pappy has a 7mm RM rifle waiting for him to use. 7mm RM?!??! Yes. I think that's too much weapon for him although he is very strong. We are Virginia White Tail folks here. I am told long range just doesn't happen often so the need for spiffy cartridges like 7mm RM or equiv. may just be for personal joy rather than needed for White Tail. Others say 30 cal or larger will ensure a quicker kill than smaller perhaps faster bullets. So many choices.

So...

I want my own rifle for East coast White Tail under 200 yard hunting. My default answer continues to be 30-06 until convinced otherwise. My favorite rifle thus far is the Browning X-Bolt because... well... it just feels and works great, though that may not be enough to purchase this model.

I understand staying lower power in the scope magnification is the way to go for this short range shooting.

The above thoughts are thanks to advice already found on this fine forum. Thank you.

I am a midlife crisis person. Thus, I am willing to help keep our gun manufacturers in business and drop some good coin on a rifle that is one notch up (stainless maybe?). I desire to participate fully, accurately and humanely in the activity of hunting. Knowing this, what are your rifle suggestions for short range East coast White Tail hunting?

The first 3 pics are of a small buck that my daughter and I enjoyed just watching and taking pics of.

The next 2 pics are of a doe and her 2 fawns who are waiting for mom to make sure coast is clear!

The last pic is of a pretty nice 4 point (one side) but he wasnt big enough for what I was looking for! I had also passed up a 5 pointer (one side) earlier, sorry no pics as I had forgotten about having my camera with me, that too was not big enough! All of my point counts are just one side as I cant get used to the way you easterners count both sides! LOL

Fore Sale or trade for the person who has everything.

I have found a supply of used meat hooks from a closed butcher shop in, CT. I have several kinds. Photos in Photo section umder 4sale MR.

Hunting season coming and these could be handy for the hunter that get a deer, moose, elk or other large game.

Also for the farmer that want to butcher is cow, pig, goat, or other animals. Can also be used to move thing around the farm, garage, shop, or factor on a cable or right angle steel beam.

They will be good for smoking meats in a smoke house.
By tying a rope line in a tree and putting it through the pulley on the meat hook and back up over another branch you can hike up the deer for butchering as using a pulley. Put a piece of pipe or cable between 2 trees you can move thing around. There many thing you can use them for besides butchering.

They would make a neat gift for Christmas for the special person on your list that has everything.

Come on how many people have a meat hook?

These are heavy duty used meat hooks with rollers on the top of each one. They are being sold as is. There is a $2.00 charge for shipping supplies on top of actual mail fee. It will be ship by the US post office. Local pick up is possible with cash payment and no $2.00 charge. Checks will be held for 10 business days. I have multiple copies of all sizes and I will ship meat hook of my choice, but all are will be in good working order. The size could be off +/-by a inch or so measured from the top to bottom. 4 Sale on Ebay also

Today was the first day of open firearms season in VA here. About ten minutes after I walked to my first stand and about two minutes after the dogs were let loose, this buck came walking right up to me, about 20 yards away. He paused for a second, caught a sniff of the next man up the fence and took off. I shot him once, he went about 10 yards, stood there, I shot again and he dropped right there. It was a pretty good way to start the season. Two loads of 000 Buck to the lungs makes deer go down fast.
I was pretty interested in this rack because the horns were about 1/2 inch apart. I think it looks pretty neat.

Why I love my Rem700 .270win

I sited my .270 in today after this morning's hunt. I know this isn't a great deal, but I was proud...I put a new scope on it, I look through the barrel with the bolt removed and line the barrel and scope on the target as best I can. It took only 3 shots to get it in the bull and 2 more to make sure of the zero.

This is from 50 yards (which I know is handgun range for some of ya'll) because that is where I site in at. Was sitting on ground with shooting stix for support. The first 3 shots were with some old winchester heavy grain elk loads (130gr corelockts are hard to come by LOL) I used them to "get close" then fired the last 2 shots with 130gr corelockts. So basically, the 3 shots in the bull were two different grain weights and brands...the win ammo is 9 years old and the rem ammo is about 2 years old. I moved the scope 2 clicks left, so the 2 holes in center are a different zero then the 3rd hole on the right. After the center two, I put the scope two clicks up...so it will be about 1/2" high at 50 yards, just like I like it!

I'm not bragging, because I know it's not a great feat to shoot a group at 50 yards. I just love my cheap Wal-Mart rifle!
Gun is a stock Rem700 ADL (I added a factory wood stock) in .270win with a Bushnell 3x9x40mm scope. Paid about 420$ for the rifle NIB in 2001 and the scope is about 70$...I know, I need a better scope. LOL

sorry this rambled on so long...I've been up since 4:45AM. :)
