animal hide uses??

is this right section? not sure how many people here tan there hides or do mounts. but im getting into the hobby soon. rabbit season just started. and trapping season starts dec 1. so im ready. but just curious what uses you all may have for the hides fur on or fur off.. i know you can make blankets, pillots, etc. also by cutting hide with fur off in a circular spiral pattern, making a leather rope/string (hard to explain through text).. would definatley be a good skill to have for survival.. anybody do it? what do you do with your pelts..?

lol is anyone else watching this weeks episode of "Surviving Disaster" on Spike TV?

This weeks episode, "Global Viral Pandemic"

A nasty highly infectious and deadly form of bird of pig or swine flu has quickly spread throughout the world... A vaccine is 6 months away... Can you survive?

So far they have gone over pre disaster supplies, alternative food sources, initial grocery stores being over run, panic, degeneration of law and order as emergency services are over run, quarantining the infected, looting and riots, eventual loss of public services such as power, total societal collapse, scavenging outside your house for supplies, and eventually fortifying your house and defending your home from other armed groups trying to attack you for your supplies.

It was interesting when the host guy asked the homeowner he was with if he had a gun to defend himself with and the guy actually said "yea." and came back with a Remington 870 Tactical.

Here's one you can add to your SHTF movie view list: Back from Eternity. It's a 1956 movie starring Robert Ryan, Antia Ekberg and Rod Steiger with a respectable supporting cast including Jesse White, Gene Barry and Phyllis Kirk among others.

The plot's a disaster-type; Gooney Bird with passengers and freight has to force-land in the middle of the Central American jungle. It's more valuable from the socio-dynamic point of view - how people pull together in survival mode after a disaster - than for any survival techniques. Great filmmaking, it isn't; but it's still useful viewing.

I know absolutely nothing about them. All I know is my Zombie Response Unit needs them.

I don't care about talking to Chinamen, but the more power the better. Right?

And it was suggested that I get one that can scan EMS/police/etc. frequencies. And something about Vipers.

gasoline storage /shelf life

what about storing say a 55 gal drum for generator etc. add stabil and store in cool dry location. anyone have any expeirence or knowledge of keep time ?

WASHINGTON, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The defense bill President Barack Obama will sign into law on Wednesday contains a new provision that would pay Taliban fighters who renounce the insurgency, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin said on Tuesday.

The provision establishes a program in Afghanistan similar to one used in Iraq where former fighters were re-integrated into Iraqi society, Levin told Reuters.

Obama plans to sign the bill authorizing Pentagon operations for fiscal 2010 on Wednesday, the White House said.

Reaching out to moderate Taliban members is part of the Obama administration's plan to turn around the eight-year war in Afghanistan. Levin also has advocated trying to convince Taliban fighters to change sides by luring them with jobs and amnesty for past attacks.

Under the legislation, Afghan fighters who renounce the insurgency would be paid for "mainly protection of their towns and villages," Levin said.

It would be "just like the sons of Iraq," he said, referring to the program used in Iraq which military commanders say helped turn around a failing war.

"You got 90,000 Iraqis who switched sides, and are involved in protecting their hometowns against attack and violence."

If we start funding them who's to say they won't come back and bite us in the ass? I think the only reason it didnt happen when President Bush was in office is the sole fact that he showed from the get go that he would'nt stand idly by and let them (the terrorists) have their way over the Amreican people. If we start giving them money do you really think they'll leave us alone? We helped them in the '80's against the Soviets and now we're having our own munitions used against us. what's to keep them from using current ordinance in the exact same way?
I think I'll err on the side of caution (paranoia if you rather) and keep my pantries full and my caches well stocked also, just something for us to think about. Maybe the idea behind "Red Dawn" wasn't so far off after all.

I live in a solar and wind cabin I designed myself and built for under $2000.

It would make a great hunting cabin, guest house, or survival retreat.

Coleman fuel shelf life

Does anyone know how long Coleman fuel will last?I've got a can that's probably 6-7 years old.I know gas breaks down in time but don't know about Coleman fuel.I've got 2 Coleman backpacking stoves,1 2burner stove & a lantern for emergencies ,but they won't do much good with bad gas! :banghead:

Spices for SHTF

Alot of people don't realise but in the time before refrigeration spices were the main means of food preservation along with salt. So i suspect that if the SHTF spices will once again be a very very valuable commodity. my question is what spices are you storing and how are you storing them.
