I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this, but after freezing my butt off in our deer blind with a crappy sleeping bag for several nights, I ordered a new one off of Amazon.
My criteria were:
1. Warmth
2. Non-nylon outer shell for quietness.
3. size-I'm 6'3" 215 lbs and need a little elbow room

Since it will stay in our deer blind mostly, weight and packability didn't matter much to me. I found a Coleman Ash Canyon kingsize bag rated @ 25*F. with a cotton outer shell\flannel inner that comes with it's own built-in bag\carry handle and it is awesome! It's not a high-dollar bag with an everyday price tag of $40, but it only cost me $14.99 because I used the $25 gift card that I got from filling out a shooting sports survey that a member posted here several weeks ago, plus I opted for the free 2nd-day shipping.
If you need a new bag and don't mind one with the heft and size of a VW Bug, this is a great bag. :bigok:

A few years ago I bought off some military surplus site an item called "Chemical warming bag" At any rate that's what my mom told me the german translated to. She also translated the instructions for use for me. I kept it in my emergency kit for a few years. I have seen packets before that you put in water, and they heat up and you can heat your MRE, or what have you in it, so I'm familiar with that way that this thing is supposed to work. But after thinking about it, I decided to dump the thing. It's dated Nov. 1966, I only have a translation of what doesn't seem to be the whole instructions, and if I'm ever in a place where I can't get a fire going, warm food probably won't be top priority!

I really wonder if the thing is any good yet anyway? One way to find out. I kneaded the package according to the instructions, to make sure it wasn't hard or lumpy, ran up to the kitchen grabbed a stainless steel bowl, filled it with water. Open up the protective package and throw in the "chemical warming bag." So far so good. Watch for a while, and don't see any sign of heat. Hey, what if I rip the bag open and pour the powder in the water, what would happen? No sooner thought than done, I dump the powder in what I now realize is my wife's mixer bowl-- oh, well, it's stainless steel. I watch for a while, but get bored, figure I'll go down in the basement and tinker for a while, and check on it later, now notice that my fingertips are stained black. Oh well. When I come back upstairs there is no warmth at all in the water. I get sidetracked until my wife asks me when I'm going to clean that mess up. Hey I'll just flush it down the toilet. I pour it in the toilet, but this black mass sticks to the bottom of the bowl-- no big deal I'll break it out in pieces and flush them. It breaks out in two pieces that I throw in the pot, then attempt to flush. They stay in the bottom, flush after flush. Pouring hot water down the john doesn't help at all. Drop this, I gotta get this mixing bowl clean. I use detergent and an SOS pad, but it appears that this crud may be corrosive! I don't know what to think, but there is black crud stuck in what appear to be pits in the bowl surface. The bowl goes downstairs to await steel wool. And my attention turns back to the john. I have been able to get most of the "chemical warming bag chemical" out of the pot by scraping it with a hanger, but the toilet bowl is definately stained brown!

Thought I would warn you guys, keep your ideas in the basement!

There are obviously a lot of different opinions about guns.

To me, the main gun in one’s battery is a semi-automatic pistol, preferably with a fairly large magazine, in a common caliber and here’s why..."

I have not done a whole lot of elephant hunting here lately and I haven't taken down a major gang of BGs in a gunfight in simply months! So, my real utliliztion of my guns lately has been to dispatch unwanted critters from my yard and garage. Mostly little slithery critters. We have snakes here and it seems they are all Copperheads. Some of the smaller ones have occasionally slipped into the garage, even though we keep it closed. I keep the garage heated so I think they are headed for the warmth.
I have developed a battery of working guns to take care of this yeoman's work. The top one is a NEF pardner youth model in .410 bore. The bottom one is a Crickett that my grandkids outgrew. I mounted a Center Point Laser on it.
The shotgun, loaded with 7 1/2 shot, is for outdoors in the yard and the Crickett , loaded with rat shot is for inside the garage. I have sighted in the .22 at 12 feet and get a pretty effective pattern. They are not awesome by any means, but they get fired more for real (at a living target) than any other gun I own. I wouldn't use the .22 rat shot on any of the bigger snakes, but they haven't been getting into the garage so they are .410 bait anyways.

Ok guys i just want some reassurance on what i already have and how wise my hopeful future purchases are..here we go
i live in the countryish part of northern indiana(about 20 minutes from the michigan border). my property consists of 6 acres i believe of fields and woods, and behind that...field and woods. i have a 275 yard range and im allowed to shoot on the field just behind mine so when the farmer plants beans instead of corn or when its all just dirt, the range is extended to around 800 yards. so i want some reassurance on my firearms and how well they would work for this type of land and if the next guns i want are wise choices. i have a remington 870 12 gauge with 28" barrel and knoxx comp stock used stricktly for skeet shooting, a mossberg 500 12 gauge synthetic stock with 28" vent ribbed barrel, 24" smoothe bore rifle sights slug barrel, and 24" rifled cantilever scope mount with bushnell 3-9x32 scope slug barrel...i also have a mosin nagant 91/30 using surplus ammo that isnt very accurate, with a custom bent bolt, recoil pad, and scope mount but i stick with the irons because of this next gun...savage 116 SS weather warrior 30-06 springfield synthetic stock with a 4 round internal box magazine, no floor plate, and bushnell sportsman gloss black 4-12x40 scope shooting my reloads using sierra 175 grain HPBT matchking bullets. my next gun is an old stevens springfield 410 pump shotgun which i dont fully trust, with a smoothe bore skeet barrel and wood stock. next is a semi auto 12 round tubeular magazine springfield 87A wood stock open sights 22 long rifle, i dont fully trust this one either. i coated the bolt assembly with a dry lubricant and it runs a whole lot better but sometimes the shell wont fully eject and itll jam up bad(needing the stock to be taken off and put back on). next is a winchester 94 TOP eject 7 round(i believe) tubular magazine lever action rifle, iron sights, wood stock, very light and short, comfortable gun. next is a marlin 925R bolt action synthetic stock 7 round magazine fed(i have two magazines for it) 22 long rifle. very reliable gun, never had a problem that was the guns fault even after aproxamately 15,000 rounds. ive got a BSA sweet 22 scope on it 3-9x40 with zeroings out to 275 yards. last is my S&W model 10 revolver with wood grips, 38 special 6 shot. i dont trust this thing at all. something in the internals is busted and ive had it fixed before but its broken again. i pull the trigger quickly or pull the hammer back quickly and the cylinder over turnes, causeing the firing pin to hit between two cartridges or on the side of one. extremely unreliable gun that i do not like at all, im more of a semi auto handgun guy.

so how do you think these would work for SHTF? if i had to take only one which would you advise?

now for my second part.
in the future(within a few years) i would like to buy a semi automatic centerfire handgun, preferably a 1911, and a rifle in 223.

i want an AR-15 but theyre so danged expensive. if i dont get the ar-15, i would like to get a stevens 200 in 223 as a target rifle. do you think my current arsenal would get me through SHTF without the AR or what? the stevens is much cheaper and you dont have to pay a lot for a high quality rifle like with the AR-15s. i wouldnt burn through ammo as fast either seeing as how its bolt action(i wouldnt be bump firing or going through 150 rounds in minutes)

so what do you think? i just want some reassurance that my current loadout would work
