I know there was a change to this gun, or at least the barrel, during the manufacturing era of the gun..

I'd like to slap on a shotshell barrel on this receiver, but I was wondering what the change was??

I bought a new in the box, but dull finished barrel from a guy on Gunbroker, but it's not here yet.. Is the only difference the size of the ring that slides over the tube?

He says, he got it as a trade for some car parts, and has no idea what it's worth. He is willing to sell it to me or trade it for another firearm.

To tell you the truth, I really just want to get the gun out of the guys hands. He's young, and knows nothing about guns. He came to me and asked and asked me to show him how to shoot the thing. He doesn't hunt, and doesn't want to hunt. He just got the gun for the hell of it. People like that make me a little nervous, so I offered to buy it. Don't get me wrong, if he decides to keep it, I will do everything I can to teach him the right way to handle it.

Now, I have found a ton of info about the 870, but not much concerning the price. What do these go for, new? I haven't seen the gun yet, but if it's clean and in good condition, I'm gonna make him an offer. What would be a good ballpark figure to throw out there, as an offer. Like I said, the guy doesn't know much about firearms. While I want to get a good deal, I don't want to rip him off at the same time.
