Last night wile installing yet another scope on my .17 HMR, it dawned on me as I stood there looking at my rimfire collection what I have managed to do.
I bought the Marlin 17HMR (standard, non bull bbl.model) for it's long range accuracy & power. But yet, my 2 pet Marlins are set up exactly backwards!
Let me explain.
OK, I have a Marlin model 880SQ .22LR, wich is a bull bbl., with a 4-12X x 40mm AO scope on it and a bi-pod. It is set up for "long range" .22LR shooting. And for that it does good. 1.5" 5-shot groups all day long with CCI Stingers at 100 yards.
And then I have a Marlin 917 17HMR, wich has a lightweight barell, a long eye relief 2X x 20mm scout scope & lightweight flashlight on it!

So infacto: The short range round is in a long range platform, and the long range round is in a "blast 'em up close" platform!

LMAO !!!!!!! BUT, not all is lost! As these riffles were made this way out of neccecity! The 880SQ I have had for 8 years before aquireing the 917 17HMR (bought this year).
I was really getting into extended range .22LR shooting (200+ yards) and loving every minit of it ! It becomes a real challange much past 130 yards!!
However, of all the .22's I have, the Armscor M1600 has allways been my "backyard varmit" gun to grab. It is set up with a 40mm red dot sight and a mini-mag light flashlight. One night after shooting a skunk 3 times to put him down, I decided something with more killing power was needed for the Opossums & Skunks that keep getting my cat's food & spraying around the house.
My one & only .22 MAG is a beautiful gun in 99.95% condition, so I did not wan tto mess it up. ( It's a safe queen. )
Plus, this gave me an excuse to get a new gun.
I was looking for a .22MAG when this lillte sweetheart 17HMR leaped into my arms. And it has been love every since.

Then it occured to me :thinkerg:
Makes perfect sense when you stop & think about it! Just because a 17HMR is known for it's long range accuracy & power, does not mean it HAS to be used only at long range. If it packs a wollup at 100 yards, it is going to hit even harder at 25yds!
And I will say this, when one attacking Opossum meets one mean 17HMR hollow point bullet at 15 yards, it no longer has to worry where it next meal is going to come from!

ANYONE have any experience with these at all?

There looks to be some sort of a plastic block that keeps the stock from being a Folding Stock...

I'm just not sure whether or not to dig the block out, or push the pin(?) out and see if it separates with ease??

I'm hoping someone else has monkeyed with these before I go digging into it ;)
Granted, they're only $24.25 at Numrich...but I prefer not to break it right after I bought it ;)

i was at walmart today picking up some nightcrawlers and usually will look in their gun cases when im there and saw a marlin model 917v that caught my eye as well as a savage 93r-f. fom what i noticed the marlin had a much nicer stock, a much heavier barrel, sling studs already attached but no sights, the savage also had the sling studs and no sights but the stock felt cheap as though they took the stock from a $30 bb gun and slapped it on in a hurry, there was no weight to it and it felt like if i dropped it then it might shatter. im a taller guy and suprisingly both felt ok as far length but they have those stupid trigger gaurds so i wasnt able to evaluate trigger pull unfortunatly but i did work the bolt on both a few times and it is buttery smoothe on both but the savage was just a little bit smoother. both rifles were between $200-225 so the price diference will not make a differnce. i will mostly use it for killing time and paper but possibly aslo groundhog/squirrel/yotes around my place. do any of you have experience with these? about how heavy is the trigger on each? based on this information i have provided wich would you choose and why? thanks in advance.

i've been trying to accurize my model 60 for the past few weeks and here's what i've found that the mod 60 doesn't like a completely free floated barrel, or full contact bedding, but it does like to be free loated with uppward pressure at the end of the forearm.

i also found that cleaning the bore spotless had a negative effect on accuracy, but shoots great after about 15 fouling rounds.

here's how it performed at 34 yds. with bulk ammo. if you count the 2 two stray shots as flyers or as user error, then it grouped 5 with .05 center to center. im am very satisfied and can't wait to go squirrel hunting with it.

right to left top to bottom Remington thunder bolt, federal re box, CCI stinger, Remington hollow point, and Winchester.
I do believe they suite their respective roles very nicely now...

The 10/22 gained a trigger polish job, a Romanian Trainer sling (my favorite for sling shooting - it stretches just a bit and pulls back harder than does a web sling), and four magazines. I found during Appleseed that fast mag changes are a bit hard with the stock mags, so I got two, 10 round magazines which protrude, giving me something to grab and change out quickly.

The Savage gained the bipod, a Limbsaver barrel de-resonator which does seem to work, a sunshade, a new recoil pad as the length of pull was too short for me, a 'scope level, and two 10 round mags in addition to the stock five round mag.

The Savage has gained some weight, but I still have no problem toting it around the woods for squirrel, though I prefer to use it to still hunt. The 10/22 gets the nod for stalking and hike-hunting.

At 50 yards, the Savage will do dime-sized groups all day. The de-resonator seems to have eliminated fliers when combined with resized and weighed ammunition. At 100 yards, I have a steel prairie dog silhouette set up, and on still days I can call my shots. Even on windy days I can keep them in the vitals.

I can't think of any other goodies I need. The bipod is something I like, but I'd like a swivel version with something like a 3" to 6" extension as I tend to shoot with most of my body on the ground for stability. The 6" to 9" is just a bit high for me to stabilize myself well.

All my money is going into every small self-resetting steel silhouette I see, as well as ammo, as I believe I have these set up exactly how I want them.

If I run across a future mod that makes sense to me, I'll probably do it, but I have a .22 for long range and one for quick and dirty shooting, so I believe I'm done - for now.
