Identification Help?

I have a Feg pistol that says R-61 on the slide. My understanding is that the R-61 holds 6 rounds in the magazine. I recently bought a flat left grip panel that is supposed to be for an R-61, but it is shorter than the one on the pistol. After seeing this, I tried to put another round in the magazines, and seven rounds fit pretty easily. Anybody have a good guess as to what this pistol really is?

I can't say that I know much about the R61 at all, but I did just look at a few pictures online and it looks nearly identical to my FEG PA-63 which is also chambered for the 9mm makarov round and has a 7 round magazine. I wonder, is it possible that the slides are interchangalbe between the R61 and Pa-63? Maybe what you really have is a Pa-63 that sometime in its life got the slide from an R61? Anybody know if this is possible?

Oh and Jersey Jailer, here is a picture of an FEG R61 I found on the net followed by a picture of my PA-63 for comparison.

Musicmaniac -
Thanks for the pictures. My R61 looks more like the PA63. However, the frame has the black finish on it. It may just be my imagination, but the grip on the R61 picture looks shorter than the PA63.

If the info copied below from Hungarian PA 63 FEG 9X18 Pistol Parts is correct, the R61 and PA63 are basically the same gun.
Quote:
The Military standard PA-63 version sports a two-tone polished aluminium frame with black slide, grips, trigger and hammer assembly. While unusual for military issue in that a reflective polish was used, it was chosen due to its relative cheapness as well as quicker build time. Problems related to the durability of the aluminium frame were resolved prior to the development of the PA-63 in 1961 with the production of the FEG R-61 Police Pistol. The addition of .1% titanium to the aluminium alloy solved premature alloy frame wear problems inherent in the earlier FEG aluminium framed pistols. This development was then applied to all aluminium framed FEG guns including the PA-63.

I was told that the R61 is the "military" version of the PA-63...that is, it was issued to the hungary communist army/police, thus its "crest" on the slide...don't know if any of that is true. My R61 comes with one magazine that holds 6. I am unable to find any information on the R61 and if its magazine is interchangeable with the PA-63. I, myself, has not attempted to use any PA-63 parts with my R61.

Someone may have relaced or altered the follower or spring to allow the extra round .
magazines should have enough "play"(1/2 rnd) so when you "Tac." load a magazine with the bolt closed it will lock into the magwell. New Glock magazines are notorious for not locking up. I can't tell you how many times my second shots went click on me (on the range), that's with all my glocks not just my 26. I've owned about 5 different Glocks. Glock mags also seem to not want to load fully when new. That was my only real complain about a Glock that I've had. For a Law Enforcements instructors point of view, (back in 1988) I recommended the Glock over several different semi-autos because the trigger pull was the same for each shot. Easier to train the troops. Today thats not true, there are several DAO semis that are, I think much better than the Glock (that was for you Billy) I am not one to buy a foreign made gun, only because WTSHTF how long will parts be around? I really like my
MP-5 SA (HK 94) but I'll always go with my Colt Sporting Rifle in 9mm, before the HK, and my 1911's before my Glocks.

A R-61 is exactly like a PA-63 but with a 3.4" barrel (PA-63 is a 3.9" barrel).
