I believe the average school wouldn't have handled it this way, even as stupid as most of them seem to be getting these days.

This is obviously one of those "zero-tolerance" schools where they've replaced common sense with blind obedience to rules, because it saves them having to use any judgment or be held personally responsible for the decisions they make.

Sounds like more of the 'Zero Tolerance" crud that most of the schools have gone to so the school officials can say "We are just following the rules" instead of making a rational decision on the violation. When will you elected school board officials realize that no one rule will fit every case and demand that the school handle each on its own merit. Wake up and be fair.

I'm wondering what kind of food their eating for it to be that tough to require a knife to cut it. The school should be under fire for cooking hard food.

TT, she brought a piece of steak from home in her lunch. This is just another case of the P.C. police gone mad.

This is all about an over reaction to a simple decision by a 10 y.o. girl.

Lots of kids in today's society make their own lunches, especially if what's planned on the school menu isn't appealing to them. I can understand how a 10 y.o. might simply put a knife in her lunch pail in order to cut the meat. She probably didn't think twice about what she was doing...only doing what she thought necessary to cut the meat during her school lunch time.

As stated previously, for authorities to blindly take step "A" if the rules spell it out that way, regardless of common sense, is totally senseless over reaction.

Now, having said that, I've been there and understand the thinking when situation "A" happens. But...common sense has got to be allowed to kick in quickly before the student is branded for life as a "knife yeilding felon" in the school. Certainly, if she had threatened others with the knife this would play a heavy hand in dealing with the knife and student...but what was described in the original scenario...this wasn't the case.

Common sense has got to be the biggest factor in these situations, not following printed rules just becaue they're the rules.

Red face

Gee, we need a new law! No more home-made lunches in our schools. Each child gets a Government-approved squeeze-tube of Pablum, to go along with the stuff they are spoonfed during class.

Thumbs up More on Common Sense

My parents told me about Mr. Common Sense early in my life and said I would do well to call on him when making decisions. I hope that I've passed this advice on too.

It seems he was always around in my early years but less and less as time passed by. Today I read his obituary. Please join me in a moment of silence in remembrance, for Common Sense had served us all so well for so many generations.

Obituary:Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic
red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense, lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly
student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense, lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Aspirin, sun lotion or a sticking plaster to a student, but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense, lost the will to live, as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became big businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense
took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense, finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, sued because the coffee was hot and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense, was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know my Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm a Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

A couple of years ago we had a high school kid expelled from school for 3 weeks for bringing asprin to school. The principal at the time tried to have him arrested for bringing "drugs" on campus. This is in a small Texas town of about 3000 people. They had just adopted the NO TOLERANCE POLICY during the summer break and this occured during the first week after school resumed. It just makes no sense to me.

There was a story about a high school student who was arrested for having a weapon at school because the security guard saw a kitchen knife in the back of his pick up truck in the parking lot. The family used the truck to move things out of grandmother's house and the knife got left in the truck bed.

i know a guy that got suspended for having a .22 shell on him at school. not really sure what they think you're going to do with an empty shell, but people are idiots

I always carried a knife on me at school, and I never hurt anyone, maybe illinois wasn't the best state to do that in, but no one ever saw it

I had a teacher in 9th grade(in alaska) that carried a leatherman openly, and one that had one that folded down to look like a key and go on a key ring and he showed it to us one day, it's different worlds

I went to a high school out in the country most of the young men there carried a Case knife that was the Bling Bling there right after big belt buckles. no one ever got into a knife fight or anything. as far as i know kids there still carry knives. to give you an idea of how "contry" my high school was the FFA had parking for horses and tractors. no joke. they would feed and water your horses for you while at school now it wasnt every day someone rode a horse to school but during harvest time there was aways a few tractors and a combine from time to time.
