Bill would open sales of automatic firearms

Gun dealers, manufacturers and private citizens could possess automatic weapons under a bill considered Thursday by the House Federal and State Affairs Committee.

Interesting article on the "machine gun" bill.

First, if passed into law it would affect Kansas only. If you don't live there, you can't buy one there.

Second, all this bill appears to do is confirm that Kansans can legally own automatic weapons. It has no impact on the existing Federal laws on full-auto weapons. You still have to go through the background check, get the necessary license, pay for the tax stamp and play by the Manhattan-telephone-directory-thick rulebook on full-auto firearms.

The folks who provided information to the leglislators pointed out that for a real, crew-served machine gun, the cost is equal to or more than what you would have to pay for a brand-new car; so most folks would be priced out of the market. I did notice that while the legislators observed the main users of full-auto in Kansas are LEOs on SWAT teams, neither they nor the experts pointed out it would make military M-16s and AK-47s legal, though...
