This is not liberal/conservative.It is a case of four justices that, instead of interperating our laws and constitution are trying their hardest to base our laws on european laws and standards. There are lots of democrats out there just as rejoiceful over this decision as I,a strong conservative,am.Any American that loves freedom must love this decision, gun owner or not. sam.

SUPREME COURT (AP) - The District of Columbia's ban on handguns is over. The U.S. Supreme Court has struck it down by a 5-4 vote, saying Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting. It's the first definitive pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

But I'll not let the naysayers detract from the moment.

Next, it's time to make sure we don't elect gun banners and wind up re-trying the case. Bottom line, if he/she votes for gun control, DO NOT give him/her YOUR vote.

I'd read that it was decided by a vote of 5-4, a much narrower margin than I would have liked. Still a win for the people!

You can't do much more interpretation with shall not be infringed, but beware. Sarah Brady is still out there.

Relax, folks. There will be plenty of time to bash anti-gun people and judges later.

Right now we should be enjoying the victory, and figuring out how far it goes. I still haven't seen a transcript of the majority decision.

edit: Oops; missed seeing Ingous' link to a transcript. I guess I have some reading to do...

One thing I did forget is that Scalia and his concurring colleagues deserve a great deal of credit for what I consider to be a well written and thoughtful opinion. It does address the question of law and case directly and head on, and, I believe, given the situtation, does hit the mark. I would have preferred an affirmation vs. limitation of rights argument, but, considering the circumstances, I think they did a pretty good job of addressing the task at hand.

If you go down to News, Troy, there's a link to the opinion directly. It's not too long and worth reading.

Hope ingous doesn't mind me plagurizing his link here (and thank you very much ingous for the link !):

larryo is correct with his statement that child molesters have it the worst in prison, most have to go to protective seg. lethal injection would be more humane! much more humane! as for the ruling that is a common interest of all us in here it appears things worked in our favor, however I would still stay vigilant, who knows what the gun haters will pull out of their rectal cavities next?

... but there are times when they are around the general population in which case, they'll be killed in a matter of time. All anyone needs to do is look at past child molesters to see how long they survived in prison.
