Supreme Court Declares That the Second Amendment

Supreme Court Declares That the Second Amendment
Guarantees an Individual Right to Keep and Bear Arms

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Fairfax, VA - Leaders of the National Rifle Association (NRA) praised the Supreme Court's historic ruling overturning Washington, D.C.'s ban on handguns and on self-defense in the home, in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.
"This is a great moment in American history. It vindicates individual Americans all over this country who have always known that this is their freedom worth protecting," declared NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre. "Our founding fathers wrote and intended the Second Amendment to be an individual right. The Supreme Court has now acknowledged it. The Second Amendment as an individual right now becomes a real permanent part of American Constitutional law."
Last year, the District of Columbia appealed a Court of Appeals ruling affirming that the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms, and that the District's bans on handguns, carrying firearms within the home and possession of functional firearms for self-defense violate that fundamental right.
"Anti-gun politicians can no longer deny that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right," said NRA chief lobbyist Chris W. Cox. "All law-abiding Americans have a fundamental, God-given right to defend themselves in their homes. Washington, D.C. must now respect that right."

Well, to all the anti-gun people....I say....IN YOUR FACE!!! HAHAHAHA Ok, sorry.....But I still am keepin my guns. lol This is a great thing! For future use, this day will be ever more important being able to look back and say that on the day of 26th of June, 2008, the Supreme Court found that it IS our Second Amendment Right to bear arms, even without the need of a malitia, for personal protection. I know that this is only a drop in a bucket, but on the same hand, the people fighting for gun control are only just getting started, and we'll need every last drop in that bucket that we can get now, to save our rights then.

Just got this in an email. Sounds like the Chief of D.C. police is still going to enforce the D.C. ban. This is a copy of a letter she sent out to residents.

PLEASE POST IN FORUMS AND BLOGS. GET THIS INFORMATION OUT TO RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS EVERYWHERE.

Action Alert: Washington DC Already Planning To Restrict Law-Abiding Citizens 2nd Amendment Rights
The following is a memo sent to Washington, DC residents by Cathy Lanier, Washington, DC Chief of Police:
From: Lanier, Cathy (MPD)
Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2008 6:35 PM
Subject: Supreme Court Update
Residents,
Unfortunately, the Supreme Court today struck down part of the District of Columbia's handgun ban. I wanted to drop you a note to let you know the immediate impact of this decision.
The Supreme Court's ruling is limited and leaves intact various other laws that apply to private residents who would purchase handguns or other firearms for home possession. It is important that everyone know that:
  • a.. First, all firearms must be registered with the Metropolitan Police Department's Firearms Registration Section before they may be lawfully possessed.
a.. Second, automatic and semiautomatic handguns generally remain illegal and may not be registered.
a.. Third, the Supreme Court's ruling is limited to handguns in the home and does not entitle anyone to carry firearms outside his or her own home.
Lastly, although the Court struck the safe storage provision on the ground that it was too broadly written, in my opinion firearms in the home should be kept either unloaded and disassembled or locked.
I will comply with the Court's reading of the Second Amendment in its letter and spirit. At the same time, I will continue to vigorously enforce the District's other gun-related laws. I will also continue to find additional ways to protect the District's residents against the scourge of gun violence.
Residents who want additional information can visit the Metropolitan Police Website at Metropolitan Police Department: Gun Registration. Residents with questions are encouraged to contact the Firearms Registration Section at 202-727-9490.
Sincerely,
Cathy Lanier
Chief of Police

Why didn't she just say, "the handgun ban has been worse than useless; it's been backfiring on us for years, and leaving honest, law-abiding citizens disarmed and helpless against armed criminals. But if common sense and the facts haven't swayed us after all this time, WTF makes you think a Supreme Court decision is suddenly going to pound some sense into our heads? We're going to go down kicking and screaming all the way."
