Indianapolis: Owners must give fingerprints to get guns back from IMPD
An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department rule that makes it harder to reclaim a seized gun than to buy one is drawing criticism from gun rights advocates and has spawned at least one lawsuit.
... what I do not understand (at all) is that IF the guns are legally registered to you, why don't they just simply give them back to the registered owner?
"The rule, adopted decades ago, requires gun owners cleared of a crime to provide fingerprints before they can recover a gun from the police property room. Indianapolis' rule is more stringent than those of similar-size cities in the Midwest and could lead to the destruction of legally owned guns.
Indianapolis police officials defend the rule as an important tool for keeping guns out of criminals' hands."
... okay, IF they are cleared, they are not criminals.
... this seems to be more of a personal vendetta from the PD against the civilian gun owning populous than anything else. Overkill, anyone ?

This is utter nonsense. If it's a longarm in the Peoples Democratic Republic of New York, all you have to do to buy one is pass the NICS check and pay for it. We have to jump through a lot of hoops to get our pistol permits, including background checks and getting fingerprints; but once we have them the only chickenshit we have to put up with is getting the coupon required to let us take it home. And we have some of the most chickenshit gun laws in the country!
As far as getting a stolen gun back: All you have to do is prove you own it, and you get it back (unless it's evidence in a court case, which takes longer). A bill of sale is good, but so in the case of a pistol is your pistol permit, since ours record the serial numbers, makes, calibers and models of the ones we own.
But as far as proving we are the legal owner once we present the police with a bill of sale or other proof of ownership, all the cops want is your driver's license to prove you are you. Or so the county sheriff's office tells me.
What the Indianapolis police are doing is plain and simple harassment of gun owners, in my opinion. As Troy said, it's pure BS. Besides, what if you never had your prints taken anywhere? Does Indiana require something like the evil Firearm Owners ID Card of Illinois or its equivalent in New Jersey? What will a "Not In System" return tell the Gestapo - excuse me, the Indianapolis PD? They won't accept that you are you without fingerprints that say so? This is nonsense.
Is the NRA going after these town clowns? They deserve to be raked over the coals.
For a long, long time, the politicians of Indianapolis have attempted to create a second Chicago to show they are a "grown up" metropolis. This includes importing some police policies and even adding to them.
Sound just like bull..., it's justice prolonging the end result of giving armed citizens a chance to defend themselves or the one's they love...maybe they hope we'll just forget about them.....not a chance
My firearms were taken away from me based on a fraudulent call by a jealous fiance's mom. She simply called IMPD from another city where she lives and told them I am laid off and holding a gun. She had not seen me in days either. I was home watching TV with my fiance. IMPD shows up to my surprise, takes all my firearms, all brand new legally purchased with receipts. Then without talking to me and only talking to the old woman who made the false call, they involuntarily take me to Mental Immediate Detention (ID) in handcuffs. I am an Engineer with BS,MS from University and has been working for past 10 years. I don't have a single criminal record or any mental health issue. I am also a normal citizen with 3 kids. I was released within 2 hrs from ID. I gave my finger prints months ago. I have been told either I will have to attend Mental Health court or a firearms retention hearing. So far they have not found one single thing they can use against me. I was home with my fiance. We both know nothing happened. I try to call the firearms desk and someone is on vacation. I was supposed to get an answer regarding my property but no answer yet. I don't know how they can practically steal my firearms and keep them, and not return them.
I was very coperative to the IMPD. But the officer who came simply wrote down I am laid off and depressed and so a danger. He did not even talk to me or verify my employment or anything. My demeanor was absolutely perfect. They had no reason to believe I am "dangerous". But just to punish me for being a firearm owner, they did all this and continue. I cannot believe I have to hire an attorney to get my property back from this IMPD.
