NRA looks to ban adoption agencies from asking about gun ownership

The National Rifle Association is pushing legislation to ban adoption agencies from asking potential parents if they have guns and ammunition in the home.NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer said adoption agencies are violating gun owners' rights by asking about firearms in an adoption form. She said any request about gun ownership from an agency connected with government was tantamount to establishing a gun registry.

My response to the Miami Herald readers' forum.

Quote:
I am surprised that gun ownership is even an issue where 45+ states now allow some sort of CCW and/or OCW. It is also noted that according to the FBI and the Justice Department's own Bureau of Justice Statistics, both violent crimes and gun accidents have dropped significantly where law abiding citizens can now keep and bear arms; yet those numbers are still high in areas that still have strict and often draconian gun control. We adopted our son through Christian World Adoption, an agency that specializes in Chinese adoptions, and their “only” question pertaining to guns was during the home study visit and the verbal question asked was whether or not guns were kept in a safe and secure manner; kind of like the questions asked of other potential dangers such as steps, pools, dogs, cleaning chemicals and the like. We were assured that gun possession was not a problem with the agency. Of course, it is not a problem with the State of South Carolina either. You would think that with so many children needing homes, the process would not be hindered with the leftist nonsense promoted in Massachusetts.

One more parting shot in the Miami Herald readers' forum:

Quote:
Our constitutional rights and our safe and proven record of gun ownership is not in dispute by responsible entities, and certainly the courts will continue to support the right to keep and bear arms, even during this administration that would gladly see all law abiding Americans left disarmed and helpless. The issue here is that this Massachusetts ... contractor ... and the Massachusetts officials that hired them are obviously against the Second Amendment. Shame on Massachusetts for allowing this bad practice to go for so long. Their actions are keeping children from being united with their parents. Sadly, it is easier to get an abortion than it is to adopt a child.

The question "Do you keep guns in the home" is too easy to misuse - if not as a 'registry question' then as an "unfit parent" question by biased jerks.

The question "If you keep guns in the home, is there provision for safe storage away from curious little fingers?", or words to that effect, would IMHO be entirely appropriate.
