Florida: Adoptive parents fuming over gun question
Get set for a mountain of paperwork if you want to adopt a child.Florida's gun rights advocates say it's gotten way too personal. One of the questions many parents have to answer: Do you own a gun?
Not to sound like a gun control advocate here, but the reason adoption agencies ask about gun ownership is because they are aware of the possiblity of a small child getting their hands on a gun that's not properly stored and an accident, possibly a tragic accident, occurring. However, if they are going to ask the question, it ought to be followed up by, "How is your gun (or guns) stored?" An acceptable answer would be, "In a gun safe, unloaded," or "In a locked fast-access box," or something like that. Just something to reassure the adoption agency that the potential parents are responsible adults, which is the object of the exercise.
By the way, I agree that it's none of the adoption agency's business from a legal point of view. There is also the ethical viewpoint, however, and that's what the question is here.
