Tennessee: Law shouldn't be based on a handgun's appearance

Recent news reports about an individual carrying a legal but uncommon looking handgun into Radnor Lake State Park raises questions about whether Tennessee's handgun permit laws need to restrict handgun permit holders from carrying certain handguns based on their appearance.

Just what I could glean from the reader comments in the article, some guy had an AK "pistol” that was indeed a legal pistol according to ATF, but he caused a stir by painting the weapon to look like a toy, including an orange tip at the muzzle. Then it appeared, when questioned, he was uncooperative and illusive. The readers must have gotten the details from a related story because I didn't see these details in the article.

The gun in that article looks like one of those AK-actioned Draco pistols Century Arms International is selling; but the barrel looks longer than the photo of the Draco in their catalog. I also admit to being disturbed that the gun in The Tennesean's article appears to have an orange-painted band at the muzzle meant to make it look like a toy gun. What's the story with that? Was the guy carrying a toy gun as some kind of protest, or did he want people to think his gun was not real?

Ok I think it should be illegal to paint an orange tip on a real gun; that is just plain stupid. What if a child picks it up thinking its a toy.

Ya know I'm sick and tired of nutjobs dressing in camo walking around with their guns like they're badasses. While he was legal it sounds like he is trying to get into a pissing contest with authorities. A reminder to you that getting in to a pissing contest with authorities with guns over your gun can get you killed!

This redneck makes us all look STUPID. What we work so very hard for is going to be lost due to idiots like him.

This is the type of needless idiocy that we don't need. Too many of us worked hard over the past couple of decades to get concealed carry and other 2nd Amendment rights respected by the law and by society. Now we have to deal with these …nitwits… who never lifted a finger to preserve the rights they enjoy, but rather, left the fight to other people. Below is a partial quote from the article link provided by tnmedic.

On Wednesday, some media outlets were reporting that a blogger claiming to be Embody stated online that he would go to Nashville's Bicentennial Mall next week with the weapon.

Metropolitan Nashville Police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford said she does not know whether the reports are true, but Nashville officers have been alerted to the possibility and warned that the weapon is legal.

Calabrese-Benton said in an e-mailed statement that the reaction of park patrons showed "the average person enjoying a state park would not recognize this weapon as a handgun.

"The department is dismayed that someone would carry a weapon into a state park seemingly with the intent of testing authorities and the boundaries of the new gun law, while alarming others who want to enjoy the park."
