Lawmakers heard testimony Wednesday on a proposal to reimpose restrictions on guns within Acadia National Park and along the Appalachian Trail in Maine in response to Congress' controversial decision to lift long standing limits on firearms.
The National Park Service culture strongly buys into the "no guns are good in our parks" theory of armed citizens.
My sister is a senior Ranger Naturalist at one of our national parks. We reviewed the effects of this Congressional legislation and strongly disagreed about a citizen's right to be armed in the parks. We discussed the 2nd Amendment, the threats of 2-legged and 4-legged wild animals, drug production and trafficking, and the smuggling of illegal aliens through some parks. We found no common ground, though we grew up together and 99+% agree on all of life's issues.
In other words, do not expect open and reasonable discourse with the NPS.
