storing yer guns while away

Hey folks, I might have to leave the state during summer for a temporary job. Unfortunately I'm an apartment dweller and won't be able to afford rent out 2 places. I don't have any gun friendly friends around. I'll be carrying a couple of handguns with me at the most and I don't know what to do with my long guns (no, shipping them to you folks is not the right answer ). I have one of those economy safes for apartment types - can I just stick it into public storage along with the rest of my stuff ? Is there a law against that ? It's still 4-5 months in the future but I better start making plans. thanks!

I never leave my guns...I love my guns..they talk to me...I talk to them...late at night when my wife is sleeping I gently caress them all wearing only a zebra striped thong...

Gun Sack-ups
Protect your valuable gun with one of our silicone-treated, polyester/cotton gun sacks. These sacks provide valuable firearms with protection against rust, dirt and scratches. The cotton's natural wicking ability draws moisture away from the firearm, making these gun sacks ideal for year-round storage. Stretched diameter is 8-1/2", wide enough to accommodate virtually any gun - scoped or unscoped.
Available:

Mag Rifle/Shotgun - 52"
Rifle/Shotgun - 52"
Pistol - 13-1/2"
Black-Powder Rifle - 66"

Or your local gunstore should have them...

public storage units i have used, "knowinly" will not accept guns and ammo. plus they can be broken into.

sure you don't have a trusted friend or relative that can hold them for you???

well the only gun friendly guy I know lives in LA and his place gets robbed into more times than I care to know so I wouldn't want him to be responsible for my stuff (I gotta call in advance and announce myself in a loud voice everytime I go if I don't want buckshot in my !!!!!).
the rest are friends and all & know that I keep guns but won't have anything to do with em. dang!!

Take out insurance on them...put them in the Sackups...put them in your safe...go ahead and get a storage unit...don't say chit about them...put your safe way in the back corner and put all your belongings in front of the safe and on top of it.

sounds like a good idea...nrajoe how do you get insurance on guns ? (fortunately I'm still young & don't have any expensive guns like you folks - just a couple of mosins, couple of varminters, a marlin lever and a mossberg shuck-shuck). Anyone know if I can carry a handgun into europe ? I don't want to leave my 1911 behind - I'll feel naked without it but I guess you can't it'll only be for 10-12 weeks so I guess I can survive (unless I get lynched - I've heard em europeans don't like us colored folks )

oh btw the country in question is france :jaw:

might as well forget carrying guns in Europe too, them weanies don't let their own people have guns much less American visitors, even the Secret Service gets put through the wringer, when the POTUS is in town.

Thumbs up

I had to store my babies for awhile once, when moving from one place to another - about a month in limbo. I put the guns into a storage room I rented, and put some ratty clothes and furniture on top of them. If someone does go into the unit (shouldn't, as you'll have the only key to the lock), they see only undesirable "stuff".
They even repainted the doors while I was using it, and my lock got a little overspray - but all inside was secure.

I guess I'll stick them into storage too, secure the actions with shot locks and disable em in some way (like taking the bolts with me) and cover the safe with unwashed underwear - that way if anyone does break into the storage, break into the safe, break open the shotlocks, replace the bolts/other parts, I won't be liable for any crimes caused since that will hopefully convince the state that I had taken "sufficient precautions" according to the law - hell, I'll even take pictures of them in storage. That way if some pos does get at em and do some bs, I won't be paying the libs all my life.

those are all excellent ideas. i would add to that maybe find an old couch on the side of the road or at a flea market and hollow out the bottom hide the guns in there when you put them in a storage facility. that way it looks like you are moving in furniture and not a GUN SAFE. if you put your gun safe in there dont put anything in it and move it in there at off peak times and have it covered with a tarp. Or make a crate around the gun safe and make it look like a cedar chest or something like that but with a gunsafe inside. Or hollow out an old used refrigerater and strip out all the insides and then put the gun safe in that.... anything you can do to NOT draw attention to you. remember thieves will occasionally look at people moving stuff in those places and then rob it later. as far as the security goes at those places.. well i have had my storage for the last 15 years and its never been broke into... (i wouldnt miss anything in there if it was, its all junk anyway)
