| Super Moderator ![]() | My personal FAL carbine preference would be to have the long gas system for commonality and more space to hold, with the 18" barrel + any attachment. Part of the science of full power battle rifles is that 18" is the minimum reasonable length for a 7.62 NATO before your blast goes way up and your ballistics go down. If I were going all out and getting a DSA I'd probably go for stainless too.

| Well, my preference for a .308 and yours are different. I bought the 18" bull barrel DPMS LR-308 and put a high power scope on it. I love it, but it is a little on the heavy side - but that is how I planed it (recoil reduced). No right or wrong way to have fun. My DPMS M-4 is set up kinda like you are going with the FAL - I have the 16" M-4 profile barrel with an Aimpoint. I have been contemplating the 3x magnifier with the flip mount, but I cant see that much money in that little optic. I am thinking about just replacing the aimpoint with an ACOG. Have you thought about a trijicon Acog calibrated for the .308 round? That would definitely extend your range and still work for CQB. |

The shorter barrel really wont make that much of a difference at ranges you can hit at with a FAL. Here is some more argument for a 16.25" medium contour fully fluted bbl. Are Shorter Barrels More Accurate? As a general rule, the answer is yes. A shorter barrel will be stiffer, pound for pound, since you can run a thicker contour (diameter) with the same weight. As you increase diameter, barrel rigidity rises to the 4th power of the increase. But if you lengthen a barrel, stiffness declines in proportion to the cube of the length. So a barrel that is just a few inches longer and a bit thinner can be half as rigid.... | you like to moding a fal? i have mounted [mig-welded] a milled m-1 sight on a spare fal sight ramp and it works very well so you need no tools to set rear sights ! and if you any wiggle with upper /lower ,make two 3mm thick steel shims with lock claw grooves for both sides of the lower -install open system and hold back lock claw back -set in and close up -no more wiggles |
