Horseradish anyone?

I'm wanting to grow some horseradish and know where to get it but was just wondered if it is as easy as I have been led to believe. From what I've heard it's practically foolproof, like, dig a little dirt up and throw some roots in and there you go. Do any of you out there grow it? And also, does anybody have a good recipie for it? Personally, I love the stuff but have always just bought it at the store.

Hey there fellow central Illinoisan!

I garden alot of stuff, but have never grown horseradish... although I love the stuff!

From what I understand it is alot like you described, just burying the root and treating it like any tuber type of plant I suppose.

If you go to Arcola or anywhere close to the Amish area near Rockhome Gardens you will find horseradish in so many different cheeses and spreads you will die and go to horseradish heaven my friend! LOL

I dont think it is too far a drive from Champaign..

As usual... I wasnt too helpful but, if you go let me know, there are a few buffets that I would be happy to meet you at! LOL

Seriously though as much as I like horseradish I should probably look into growing a bit, it could be interesting!

My Neighbor grows horseradish here in Alaska...He just covers it with Hay for the winter , uncovers it in the spring...He stuck one root in the ground and now he has a cluster getting Larger each year !

I think IL might actually be the largest horseradish producing state. Seems like I outta try and grow some. It isn't a bad looking plant really, big tall dark green leaves, and a root that can cure the common cold I swear.

I don't know about growing it but I like it on Hamburgers and Hotdogs.

Horseradish IS easy to grow. I've got a patch by the end of the barn started by roots given to me 7 years ago.

When you want to harvest it, dig up one or two roots, wash and scrub in cold water, and put on goggles. Use a hand crank meat grinder (fine plate), blender, or food processor. The fumes will burn eyes and nasal passages.

At this point it's too hot to eat, so most companies add a little shredded turnip, vinegar, and salt to taste. Yumm.

My favorite store bought brand is Hanfelders, which is made in Eau Claire Wisconsin. Boy that stuff is hot! I like to pan fry catfish fillets in a bit of olive oil, sprinkle some Tony Chachere's creole seasoning on them before they get crispy, douse 'em in lemon juice once they are well browned, and then serve with hash browns, a bit of Hanfelders, and some deep fried asparagus. I made that for my mom on mothers day last year and she said it was better than anything she'd ever had at a resturant! Even my sister had seconds and she doesn't normally like catfish.

hey Cross Hair have you tried the deep fried asparagus yet? It's the bomb!

There was a small deli in St George that always had fresh Horseradish you could add to your sandwich. Wow that stuff was hot, and I love hot spicy food. It wasn't real finely chopped more like it was grated over a cheese grater. I used to have the Hot Roast Beef and add the Horseradish mmmmmmmmmmmm heaven.

Dead simple to grow. Take root, soak in water till you see new growth and then put it in the grow so that about 1" of it is above the ground and you are done.

I still havent fried any fried asparagus! I bet it would be good dipped into some creamy horseradish dip! I am getting some zuchinni coming along nicely so as soon as I get them and some green tomaters I will batter up some asparagus!
