Non Hybrid Seeds

I`m new to learning all I can about non hybrid seeds. I`d like to find a good source for `em and any info on storing `em. Most of the internet sights are expensive and who`s to say what your really getting. Can anyone give me some pointers on finding seeds other than the net. Also, any info about learning this type of gardening would be appreciated since we may just have to go back to the old way of doing things sooner than we think.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds - 1275 Heirloom Garden Seed Varieties!

This guy is about 20 miles north of me. Really young guy that started his business super young and has done very well. His shop is all about producing heirloom seeds and preserving the genetics of older varieties.

Sorry...I can't help you...because I'm a big fan of "Jet Star" hybrids for all my tomato plants.

Best to you, though, with your new hobby of collecting non-hybrid seeds.

I've ordered from him for years and everything grows well. He always throws in a few freebies here and there too. The lettuce pack I got from him could probably have filled half my garden. I split it among three people and we all have more than enough. The beans are doing great and so are the tomatoes.

I don't have any experience with his other seeds, but anything I have ordered from him has been better than expected.

Who`s a good source for learning about heirloom gardening ? magazines, catalogs etc. I think i`ll try my first hand at container gardening and see what happens. Is it too late to start a veggie crop and if not what all can I plant for this time of year in Florida. I have pool with a screen inclosure and was thinking that might be a good place to set up some attractive containers without getting the wife in a tiff. It`ll keep the bugs and animals out and hopefully get plenty of sun light. I know it gets pretty hot out there through the day. Is filtered sun good enough to grow veggies ? So many questions, i`m itching to get this started

What about collecting seeds. Can you collect them from veggies out of the grocery store, what`s the scoop ?

i would not collect anything from grocery stores ,,, maybe a farmers market but not just a large supermarket .....yuck

So when the next person gives me a few tomatoes they grew I should save those seeds right ?

We visit my wifes brothers in S. Carolina alot and usually pick up stuff from the locals on the side of the road selling fruits and veggies. Is it a better idea to save these type of seeds ?

^ Depending on what the stock plant was grown from...

...if it was grown from a non-hybrid seed it'll reproduce consistently, if not it may not reproduce consistently.

A local-area gardener did a lot of experimentation with hybrid and non-hybrid seeds and was amazed at the variances he saw in reproduction from hybrid seeds...

...my wife and I primarily use non-hybrid seeds; especially for seed storage needs, so we can harvest and regrow seeds.

yes those seeds probably have not been sprayed with pesticide for 10 years .

Would also be helpful, if you plan to harvest the seeds and plant them, to ask if the original plant was from hybrid or non-hybrid seed...

...so you can anticipate possible variances with your planting of seeds from the tomatoes.

Try The Ark Institute. All heirloom. Although hybrid, Oxford's tomatoes are doing great.Where do you find Jet star tomatoes?

try seed savers. they have a lot of non-hybrid and heirloom seeds for trade/sale. form a local group with gardeners and swap seeds. even some large big box stores are now selling organic and heirloom non-hybrid seeds. just look around, more and more they are getting very popular. organic gardening and mother earth news magazines have some scources in their ads section.
