last saturday

last saturday must have been dumb ass day.I went to the shooting range there were 3 cars there. there were 3 kids ages 4-6-8 each one had 22's revolvers. the adults had 243 and a 44 black powder. they had CD's put on horse weeds and the kids were shooting them with 22's.none of the kids had hearing protection or shooting glasses. and they were waving their pistols around. The adults hung a target in the tree about 5 ft up and were shooting it with the rifle. I couldn't believe what i was seeing the kids were shooting in the air & so were the adults. I GOT OUT OF THERE FAST

Examples like that of adults who can't or won't police themselves or their children is one of the primary reasons for the continually dwindling numbers of places to shoot.

Probably would have been waste of time to try to educate them, though maybe it was worth a shot.....

The sad thing is one of those kids may hurt someone or themselves because they obviously are not being taught gun safety.

If I were to see that at our range (I'm a member of the Sportsmen's Club) I certainly would let them know (as nicely as possible) of the error of their ways. If they gave any guff, I'd see to it that they were banned.

That's a bummer Tarza. I have had good experiences educating people at the local ranges when they are acting like fools. Actually, in the 15 years I was going to the locally recognized free range, I never had any real problems. Most people know enough to shut it down when called on poor behavior.

The simple question of "where do you think those bullets are landing?" may have started a civil discussion on safety.

That's why I don't frequent the RFC place. They shoot squirrels in trees with .22s with a range of over a mile without thinking.

As long as they use the tree for their backstop...

I should have elaborated. They hung the target from a limb. About 5 ft up it had no back stop & the interstate 80 was 1 miles away.In the direction they were shooting

The club I belong to has a Range Officer on duty at all times. Idiots like that would lose their membership and be shown the gate.....

Yes. Shooting bullets into the sky without a tree to stop the bullets. Or is it that RFC squirrel shooters shooting squirrels in tress think their bullets land in a wasteland with no inhabitants?
Check out the RFC Squirrel (the "Tree Kind") hunters over there at RFC and think for yourself.

Never shoot a .22 into an angle that could land the bullet a mile or over for a squirrel in a "tree."

That is the place (the RFC) where .22 LRs are adored to the point of extreme ignorance.

This all disturbs me but then to see the original poster is from Iowa disturbs me more (I'm an Iowa boy myself). On the one hand I never mind pointing out unsafe behavior on the range regardless if I know the people or not. I agree you where in a difficult positon. If you were the only one confronting several people then it can be much more difficult. On the other hand if you and some buddies are there and can gang up on them yoiu might be able to put enough pressure on them to change their ways at least for the day.

Since I am familure with many iowa ranges which range was this? Is it at a public range? I have been to many public unsupervised ranges and have met nothing but good people. I am sorry these ass-hats are running around giving gun owners a bad name.

I live in Kellogg and it was a public shooting range. The range is about 2mi outside town going east on highway 6 is 1000ft from the river. If you wish to look at it on a map.
