| start with a testfire-
proven $50 Glenfield Marlin.22 auto rifle. After learning to use that really well, then a used, $80 Phoenix HP22 pocket.22lr auto, also proven-reliable before buying. I'd tell them to buy "white box" generic Winchester ammo at walmart, and to buy the Federal 550 rd boxes of .22lr there ($9). After several thousand rounds thru each, you will know a lot more about what should be what when you hold and squeeze, and that will help guide you as you move into centerfires. I would tell anyone that if $ matters to you, buy used, not new,at not much more than half of current retail cost, and always insist on test firing it before buying. Then when (not if) you decide to sell or trade it, you wont take much of a beating in the wallet. A 5 gallon bucket of gravel, 5 ft of thick walled, 6" steel tubing, and a couple of rags will let you safely and discretely testfire guns almost anywhere, you know. ONe rag at the bottom of the pipe, on top of the gravel, one wrapped around the gun, inside the top of the pipe, to muffle the blast. I'd tell them to read a lot, lots of NRA members have dozens of old issues of the Rifleman mag, that they will give you, or sell for 50c each. I'd tell them to join the NRA, and to do a search for all the gun and shooting forums on the net. I'd tell them to attend some IPSC and IDPA "combat" shooting matches, to learn what speed really is with a gun. Hook up with a good gunsmith, shoot with him, buy him beer. :-) Get a catalog from Brownell's Supply, it will teach you a lot about what's doable, available, interesting. I'd tell them to avoid manually operated actions, Double action Only autos (except the Kahr PM 9, if you ccw) double stack mag autos, and shotguns. I'd tell them to avoid weirdo calibers, until they really know how to reload ammo. I'd tell them to learn to do a fair amount of gunsmithing themselves. I'd tell them to stick to 9mm and 223 and .22 lr, maybe 308 if they want to take game larger than deer. I'd tell them to avoid mouseguns, other than perhaps a .22lr M21 Beretta. I'd tell them to get the fightiing guns first, because those are the ones that are likely to be outlawed. I'd tell them to build real speed-skills with those, and then go on to the "toy" guns and sports, if they still want to. I'd tell them to move to a state with "shall issue ccw laws, get a license, and always carry. I"d tell them to get concealed body armor vest and groin protector. I'd tell them a lot more, but you are bored already. :-) |

| very few combat vets know diddly about
guns or shooting. they used what they had, did what what they were told to do. Most of the time, they ate dirt, sprayed and prayed. Even in WW2, mostly against bolt actions, the troops still fired thousands of rounds of rifle ammo for every hit that they got, and most hits were poor ones, and most hits were random accidents, too.
