Most often nowadays it is a Charter 5 shot, 44 special.
Often carry one of these when in the east--great little powerhouse (load it with the Cor-Bon DPX or the Buffalo Bore wadcutters).
I've found the Pachmyr Compacs (with the little recessed pinky hold on the grip) to be OUTSTANDING grips and fit my hand very well. Tame the recoil alot too.

Since I carry a EDC bag to work with 5 more mags and a box of ammo, is that too much? I don't think so but they do call me paranoid. I work in a not so good neighbor hood.

Paranoia is an "unreasonable" fear of persecution or perceived threat... I have genuinely reasonable motivation to conduct myself in the manner I choose.
Might still be a fool though....just not a paranoid one.
My edc is a compact 1911 &3 extra mags, 1 in the holster and 2 more in a mag pouch. My bug is a Bersa 380 with 2 extra mags. In the truck my bob has a keltec sub in 9mm and a glock 17 with 2 standard mags for the glock and 2 33's for the keltec. I also work in some BAD neighborhoods. In the near future, I hope to have a moss 500 for the truck as well with buck and ball rounds. I am not paranoid, just well prepared.
Right now I have my SR9c with the extended mag in my purse. I really need another extended mag, I just like that thing. I bought a box of Hornady Critical Defense for it tonight at a new gun shop that just opened by my work. Then I have my pink 380. Don't always have both, but usually. I like them both and it's hard to decide which one to carry, so I take both.

carry my GLOCK 36 year-round, usually have a spare mag on me as well, carried my sig 228 for a while but love the idea of a 45, I just got a tuckable holster for my 1911 so I'll have to try out this winter

After some of my own crude ballistics tests, I don't feel under gunned with my 5 shots of .38 out of a 2" barrel. By my reckoning, with the Buffalo Bore stuff I'm using, I only need one to hit.
I'd feel well armed with 3" .357.
5 shots is plenty for a mugger/thug or two. Just don't waste them.
I WILL say that my grandfather had to pull his 5 shot .38 on 6 teens that were molesting his tractor and got a little froggy when he started yelling at them.
"One of you's going to fight me, the rest won't. Who's first?"
All six turned and left.
That's all to say, there ARE situations where 5 shots might not be enough, but don't confront 6 men with only 5 shots unless you have a back up plan.
You bring up a good point to be sure. I do carry spare ammo on 2 Bianchi speed-strips and sometimes a speed loader. But I will never be a Jerry Miculek. Maybe if I run dry, I can convince the remaining bad guys that I have one of those Hollywood 50 shot revolvers? (Probably not)
I live in a rural area and the odds of confronting mass hordes of "zombies" are not that great. We do seem to be getting more and more armed robberies of banks, credit unions, and especially pharmacies. And a lot more home invasions where money and prescription drugs are stolen. But again, I'm not a LEO so my carry is for self-defense only.
