Colt Python .357mag

Colt Python .357mag
I was given a Colt Python revolver by my nieghbor. He did not want it. It has a six inch barrel and is blued. It has walnut handgrips that have a little wear on them. The serial # is 763xxE. Under the serial # is an "H". I am not into pistols. I shoot the Garand and other military rifles. Can anybody tell me what I have, the year it was made, how much it is worth?

There is more to the story on the Python and how it was given to me. My nieghbor , who remodels buildings in Chicago, saw some gangbangers in his building. They ran out when they saw him and he saw one of them ditch the pistol in the garbage dumpster. He built a house next to my house in the suburbs. I have been letting him use my electricity and he told me about the above story some time back. I thought he was talking about some piece of sh it throw away gun. He comes over yesterday and gives me a six inch Python--all blued with walnut checkered grips. I dont know now if this is stolen or what. I have some concern about that. What would you do?

MIke

Good idea, I'd turn it in, report that it was found. Chances are, a fine firearm like that was stolen.

there's not much chance that the PD will return it to the rightful owner, usually they check to see if it was used in a crime, then it goes to destruction.

find a cop (that you know or can passively trust) ask for info on the serial number...(tell him "it's for a friend") depending on the feedback ,make your decision. send it to me and i'll take the proper steps...no seriously i would be interested to know. you always have your neigbor to vouch for it's route to you. if he would.

Too bad about the uncertain chain of ownership on the Python - an E series is a desirable piece. It was made in the early-mid 1970s. I have a 4" nickel 41xxxE and believe that it was made in 1973. Python prices took a jump after Colt discontinued them several years back. The blued Python with the 6" barrel is the most common variant and a nice one should bring around $750.
