Friend Accidentally Shoots Himself in the Chest with 25ACP
I had a big surprise when I logged into my Facebook this morning. One of the young men from the Boy Scout troop I used to volunteer with had posted a picture of his self-inflicted wound to the chest. He was fooling around with his Raven 25acp, dropped the magazine but forgot to check the chamber, and BAM! shot himself just below the left nipple. Somehow the FMJ bullet ended up in his left butt cheek. Amazingly, less than 24 hours latter he’s home from the hospital and doing just fine. If I ever did something like this, posting it to Facebook is the last thing I'd do!
After I got over the utter stupidity of the whole incident, I was somewhat impressed by the penetration of that little 25acp. He’s not a little boy, pushing 200lbs easy. That was quite a trip that bullet took. Amazing that it didn’t hit anything vital. This reminded me of what I already knew: firearms demand our absolute respect and even a single moment of carelessness can have deadly consequences.
He got very lucky ! The .25acp is no heavy weight but can be lethal as all firearms are. Even air rifles and bb guns are deserving of full fledged respect.
He's lucky to be alive I am sure the slug bounced off several bones to finally arrive where it was. And COULD have hit a vital organ along the way.
Always respect ANY firearm.
I used to work with a guy who was at the lake shooting .22's with his buddy. They found a .22 round with a crimped end. He swore up and down it was a blank. Loaded his gun with it and held it to the top part of his thigh and shot. HELLO!!! It was a round of bird shot (of course). When he finally came back to work he was of course seriously given the the works. And I made ****ED sure to tell him even if it HAD been a blank it would have penetrated into him. I personally suggested he leave firearms alone, but I doubt that ever happened.
Who was the actor/singer who decided to shoot himself in the head with a blank? Fortunately he removed himself from the gene pool before he could breed. Guns are nothing to play around with, no matter what you think of them. No one shoots them self with a loaded gun, it's always "I thought it was unloaded". Morons.

And I hope when he's better and you hear him joking about it, because odds are that down the road he will joke and laugh about and maybe even brag to the ladies that he's got a bullet wound/scar, that you'll remind him how stupid it was and for him to have forgotten the number one rule of safe gun handling. Which is..... TREAT ALL GUNS AS IF THEY'RE LOADED UNTIL YOU'VE GONE THROUGH AND MADE COMPLETELY SURE THEY'RE NOT!
Again, glad your friend is alright. AND STILL ALIVE!
I believe that Freddy Prinz from "Chico and the Man" did himself in with a blank in the manner described.
I have seen a patient shot under the left armpit with a firearm and the bullet lodged under his liver (right abdomen). A direct line from the entry to the final resting spot of the bullet went from the armpit through lung, heart and liver, but the bullet managed to avoid all of these vital organs . He was discharged a day later, and probably doesn't know how lucky he was.
I also saw a patient with an entry wound in the forehead and an exit from the crown of the head who didn't even have a skull fracture. Again the direct line went through skull/brain/skull but all those goodies were missed. He was not quite so lucky with the other three entry wounds and two exits, but he survived.

I have always felt that auto pistols are less safe than revolvers, and not advisable for a newbie or inexperienced owner.
This man's gun fired with the magazine removed. Many newer autos will not fire without a magazine. Even so, it is hard to be sure an auto is empty.
My wife was firing our .22 auto and counting her shots. She shot a string and turned to me. I said, "are you sure that gun is empty?" "Yes," she said. "I counted my shots." "Just for my peace of mind," I said, "would you mind pointing it at the backstop and pulling the trigger?" She did, and it fired. Seems like her counting arithmetic was a little out of whack that day.

Hopefully he was read the riot act a few times over that but glad your buddy's alive. My step grandfathers son shot himself in the eye with a bb gun when he was younger and the bb lodged in his tear duct and the doctors don't want to risk anything by operating to pull it out so he just doesn't cry from one eye anymore

Freddie Prinz committed suicide while intoxicated. He and his wife were having problems.
If you drop a magazine, leave it and don't pick it up. Holster your handgun before retrieval. When its in your hand, there's no grabbing from the ground.
I stand corrected- the the actor Jon-Erik Hexum shot himself in the head while playing russion roulette with a .44 magnum blank and subsequently died.

Let's describe that a little more broadly:
before you perform any action other than point the muzzle downrange, holster your handgun.
