Figured it was time to put one in my range bag. I have a couple but they are heirlooms and I don't want to risk travelling with them.
I ruled out Springfield Armory, because they are foreign made. I know they are proven, but all the recent firearms I have aquired are US made and I want it to stay that way.
It isn't going to be a carry gun, it's going to be a range gun, and one I can take whenever my job sends me to a place that bans high capacity firearms.
Any recommendations based on personal experience would be appreciated.

I have Colts, Kimbers, Dan Wesson's, and Sig 1911's. At one time or another, I've carried all except two of 'em with no reservations, or problems of any sort, except for the shooter. The two I didn't carry have 5" barrels. The others have 4-4.25" barrels. These are production guns, and of these, I'd have to give the nod to Dan Wesson. My two DW's have the best factory triggers I've ever had my hands on. That being said, all of mine have less than a 4 pound trigger pull.
edit.... when you're trying 'em on, remember that the evolution of "thin grips" really affects the "feel" of a 1911. Some like it, and some don't, but I can really tell the difference. It's all personal preference.
Shopping is fun... go get 'em

Colt, Kimber, Remington, Ruger, SIG, and Smith & Wesson. All American made. Personally I think the Remington Enhanced is probably the best buy or the lot.
Kimber, Rock Island, Springfield, ATI, and Sig here. The only reason I'd never carry the Sig is because the top of the slide is square and it doesn't fit my molded holsters...and I don't need one more holster in the holster drawer.

Depends on how you feel about it not having the 1/2 cock notch and the 1/4 notch letting the hammer fall when you pull the trigger.
I'm not a fan, personally. I know their theory is "there's not enough distance to create enough momentum to detonate the primer"...but who would want to chance soft primer cups with that? Not me.
YMMV

One thing about the fact that M1911 type grip panels can be dismounted is that you can change them. Figure out the total thickness of the grip which feels most comfortable to you, subtract the thickness of the frame, divide by two, and go shopping. The improvement in accuracy you will notice is worth the money.
Case in point, though not precisely on point: I own a Smith & Wesson Model 10-5 revolver with custom grips. It was a police officer's carry gun, and he had customized the grips to fit his hand. Other people had tried it and it did not fit them. That pistol fits me like a glove. I'm a fair to middlin' shot with almost any pistol -- but with this Model 10-5 I'm a deadeye, simply because it fits my hand perfectly.

That is exactly the reason that several members here, and myself, stress the importance of "fit" when shopping for, and selecting a firearm to purchase. After proper fit is obtained, the proficiency part is much easier to accomplish.

Big reason why the M&P is taking alot of glocks market share.

I tried on a couple different rentals, I decided on a Sig 1911 with the rounded slide, two-tone, adjustable novak sight. I'll update with the predictable range report and a pic.

I've always wanted to go with a Para myself. Like the option of high capacity mags. Had a taurus and it was an absolute piece of crap. Very poor machining, I returned it after taking it apart, never even shot it. Also had a springfield and it was decent but wasn't anything to write home about.
