22 WMR Pistols

I understand that 22 WMR is much more powerful than 22 LR for protection, and I realized I don't see too many auto pistols in that caliber, only revolvers. All I know of is the Grendel, which used a pretty hefty hi cap magazine before the ban. They had a carbine that used the same one. Any other 22 WMR autos aout there?

In rifles all I know of are the 10/22 and Remington 597.

Welp, apparently Mossberg and Marlin make/made rifles and AMT made huge pistols in that caliber. But nothing CCWish.

H&R too made one. And Marlin's seems to be discontinued.

Lightbulb

The AMT Automag II can still be found, and was available in a shorter 4" barrel version.
Volquartsen makes an abominably expensive semi-auto target pistol (the Cheetah, IIRC) in the .22WMR caliber.

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking with the shorter barrels common on most autoloading pistols there would be a point of diminishing returns on velocity. Your not gaining a whole lot from a lengthy barrel 6" or more revolver over the standard .22 LR. The 22 MAG shines it's best in a rifle. If the couple extra hundred ft per sec is wanted in a carry gun for rimfire the derringer type fits the bill for right now.

Does it have much power? I have a friend who said he shot a rat with 22 rat shot and it looked at him, shook the pellts off of his fur, and snickered at him.

I really don't know..most .22 magnum ammunition is made for rifles so a slower burning gunpowder tends to be used...the result is is I get alot of muzzle flash because the unburnt gunpowder is still burning after it leaves my muzzle...and it is a sharp crack like a .223 instead of a gentle boom like a .45ACP

I could imagine a nice target pistol in 22 WMR, too bad they're not made except 10/22 versions.

the .22 magnum round is too long and narrow for reliably cycling in an auto...I think it is a better revolver round

it has a lot to recommend itself in a revolver...22 magnum hollowpoints cost typically half what other premium centerfire hollowpoints costs and it takes up alot less space (if you are on the move)..in the case of a misfire (dud..not squib) you just squeeze the trigger again..doesn't sound like it has a lot going for it but I think everyone could use a good .22 magnum or even .17 hummer

I know this topic is a little old, but a couple of months ago,a man here in NC stopped a purse snatcher with a AMT or NAA semi auto 22 WMR.

Topics are never too old to continue here. I've been told that 22 WMR is not a bad round for personal defense. Of course others are far better, but it's saved a life or two in its day.
I think it should be chambered in larger pistols than tiny NAA snubbies and smaller than target revolvers.
