Thumbs up MAKAROV links and info:

--If new to Makarovs and looking to purchase one, learn how to field strip a Mak before you begin to look. (See www.makarov.com for excellent illustrated takedown instructions.) I have seen a number of aparently nice Maks that have rust and corrossion inside. That aside my suggestions are as follows:

--If you want a shooter, look first at a Bulgarian military mak. They are readily available at $130-160, are well-made and are generally a nice all-around Mak.

--Outside finish wear is not significant, however I avoid any pistol with rusting and pitting, even if refinished.. This generally suggests hard use and poor storage. Honest wear, such as holster wear on the front or sides of the slide, smooth wear from use and such can be easily taken care of with a little cold blue or a refinish. New maks have triggers that some describe as "gritty"--this diappears with use. My favorite shooters are a well worn '84 Bulgie that eventually had refinishing of the slide and a '60 EG with some holster wear.

--Learn the markings and the values. It's been a while since the value list has been changed on the makarov.com site, and here are my opinions and comments (as of June 2004). Please keep in mind that there are regional differences and some types seem to be more available and priced differently from area to area:

(Regarding price guidelines at Makarov.com) I think the Bulgie price is accurate, but the EG and Russian miliary are about 50 bucks too low on both ends of the range (although occassionally one finds a real bargain); if someone gets one of these for 200 bucks there are a lot of "oohs" and "aahs".

--The IJ70 Commercial Russian pistols are the most variable in terms of market price. They tend to either be high or real bargains. Some people, including makarov.com have said the hi-caps are to be avoided; I disagree. Mine is very accurate and problem-free. The adjustable rear sight was added strictly to meet import requirements and is not generally effective. In addition it makes the pistols less appealing as they can catch on clothing and easily break if adjusted to vigorously.

--Ask questions an search the mak sites, lots of good info here, at Gunboards:

http://www.gunboards.com/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=3

and Guns Network

http://www.gunsnet.net/forums/forum...&forumid=64

--Hit every local gunshop and look at all of the internet sources. Be careful however that a good price on the net requires shipping, ffl transfer and possibly a charge for the instant check.

--Read all you can about them. Here are some of my favorite links that I have posted be:

Have you any info on the Polish Radom P64 9X18 Makarov

And BTW, thanks for all the great Mak links, I copied them for future Ref. I'm just curious whether you've heard anything about the Polish Mak. It sure is a Great looking piece! That said, I've heard little about them.
