Berreta 92/96 models Decent firearm or crap?

Specifically on the berreta models used by the military and by law enforcment, Ive heard a lot of stories from people who carry them for for work or who own them themeslves specifically the 92/96 series.

Ive heard people tell me why (with examples) of how they are some of the greatest guns in the world or the one of the worst.

I know of one police department who used them in 9mm, later when they wanted to move up to .40 cal they chose to abandon the berreta (even when offered trade ins/conversions to the .40 cal berreta models) and instead go to the .40 SigPro instead.

Im not asking here about stopping power or anything like that but does anyone here own or carry the berreta models for work, pleasure, etc?

What are your thoughts on them? Are you satisfied or would you rather carry something else?

Thumbs up

I don't have one myself, but my shooting buddy has two 92's. His first one, a blued model, he got back in the late seventies. It's always performed well, and been very accurate and reliable.
His new one is nickeled, only a few months old. It also seems a good performer.
However, they don't get subjected to the rigors that a LEO or Military pistol does.
Everyone I talk to at the range who owns the Beretta 9mm pistols likes them.

I think the story goes that the old ones with the slides not made in the US should be avoided (pre-1988 I think) and the military issued magazines need babying in dusty conditions but I have no experience myself. I might pick up a used one one of these but double stacks don't feel right for my hands - and in California you're capped at a 10-round limit so there is no capacity advantage.

yup. unless it's a pre-ban. The magazines on all guns (beretta, cz75, sig etc.) that ordinarily would be high-cap in other states need to be disabled in some way (that is not easily undoable) so you can't load more than 10 rounds.

I carry an M9 on duty at Wright-Patterson AFB here and am not real thrilled with it. The trigger pull in DA mode is worse than a Sigma, and mine has jammed several times at the range. It's brand new and has only about 500 rounds through it. I'd like to really wring it out sometime, but the Air Force won't let us shoot it unless it's for qualifications.......

I have a 96 in .40 cal. Very nice weapon. Has the night sights. I don't think you will be disapointed.

down here in canada all pistol mags have to be made to 10 rounds, all center fire rifle mags have to be limited to 5 rounds as well. my cz75 has 15 round mags and they've been punched to allow only 10 rounds.

I rented one and was thoroughly unimpressed. It only jammed once, but the feel was horrible. I think there must be different grip shapes, so try a variety for feel.

I have had a 92F for years and it is one of my best guns that I have owned -- may go to the sig for the reputation and it does have a stronger slide.

My 92fs shoots like a dream. I only switched my personal carrier to UPS 45 because
of the caliber. I get 15rd beretta clips 10-$100.. These are used army one's but in
excellent conditoin. The guy I get them from, gets them from military surplus auctions...
They work great and so does my 92. I've shot about 2,000 rounds through my 92FS
and it's never jammed.

I'm a big fan of the Beretta. I qualified with it many times in the USAF and it never failed to fire while on the range. Even those around me on the range never had a jam, even the skinny little females who had never shot before. Had a Model 96 and it was superb. Have a Taurus 92 now and am as equally impressed with it with the exception of the DA trigger pull. Will probably send it back to the factory to be lightened a bit.
