The gun ban wagon has arrived!

I got asked this by a nice woman on the epilepsy website I belong to, I couldn't help her but I hope someone here might:

"The gun ban wagon has arrived!

We (1st I live in CA) received a package/letter in the mail yesterday. The DOJ says that the Walther P22 we purchased in 2003, had some features banned by legislation the same year, so we have the oppertunity to "comply" with the law by FedExing the gun (the whole gun) to Smith and Wesson to have the barrel replaced. They only insured our 400 dollar gun for 100 dollars!!!!! And then S&W will send a notice of compliance to the DOJ. But if we don't we will be charged according to the new law!

My husband wont send it until he has spoken to someone, but they really have our butts in a sling! What happens if FedEx looses it? Are we then responsible for any misuse of our gun because the DOJ decided the "banned" parts thing was immediately effective, or prehaps retroactive? I had this deep pit of my stomach feeling as I remembered something I posted about denial. That firearms owners are in denial about gun confiscation(sp?) and I can no longer believe that it wont happen.

Well, aside from venting/warning... I was wondering if you had any ideas about what to do.
Anything would be good. You seemed to be so knowledgable about the subject, so I thought it was worth asking!

Thanks,
Monica"

Any input?

Angry

1) Move to a free state.

2) Have a good gunsmith change the offending part (surely an FFL 'smith can get a new barrel!).

3) Turn the gun in at a gunshop and exchange for a newer model with the Cali-legal barrel.

Yep, this is BS at it's best. Another end-run to confiscate perfectly good guns.

Idiots, all of them...

The only feature the Walther P22 would have that I know of (I did some research on this because I was looking into .22 pistols) would be a threaded barrel. That'd be so the gun could accept a silencer. I'm assuming this is the "banned feature" you're talking about. All you'd really need to do is either take it to a gunsmith or just take a hacksaw to the barrel yourself. They couldn't take away the gun if you took off the threaded barrel.

You've probably got 90 days from whenever they gave you the notice, too.

Kalifornia, Kalifornia, Kalifornia.

I'm 62 years old and for as long as I can remember Kalifornia has been known as the land of the "fruits n' nuts". Now that I have a personal "fruit" of my own ( my 24 yr. old gay Son, who I love with all my heart) I don't say that anymore. But I'm still convinced that the "nuts" part is accurate and this is the type stuff that just reinforces the sterotype of folks who live in the wacko state. Or, at the very least, the politicians of the state. How my favorite President of all time got out of (escaped from) Kalifornia normal is beyond me.

Of course if you want a real laugh, check out Great Britian some time. Only the fox and the criminal are safe there anymore. Now they want to outlaw "sharp tipped" knives. Next?
