357 Revolvers - Ruger Security Six vs Colt Trooper

I'm looking into a 357 SA/DA Revolver with 6" barrel and am currently considering these two discontinued models based on their reputation and some experience.

What matters to me is that they're tight, slick, reliable, and sturdy. I'm not looking for something to hot load, so it doesn't have to be overbuilt - just built right.

One thing that matters to me is a low barrel axis for minimum muzzle jump. Haven't exactly been able to measure these yet.

So what would you choose? Please, if you choose "other", only do so if you believe that your choice is actually superior to either of these two for some reason besides price.

Rossi Cyclops or mateba would more than fill youre no muzzle jump requirements if you can find either.

Other than that stick to smith or ruger.
I prefer smiths.

This is one of my favorite .357 Magnum Revolvers; it is a Ruger Security-Six in stainless with a 6"bbl target sights and Hogue grips. She was a police trade in that was very dirty yet shot little and carried rather hard. She cleaned up nicely...

I'm familiar with the Mateba and unfortunately its price and gas powered cycling system make it unsuitable for my needs.

I'm not sure what about the Rossi Cyclops makes it an improvement over the Colt and Ruger. I'm not looking for something that's ported.

i would take a hard look at the current ruger GP100. i believe its a better balanced pistol than your other choices. the other 2 are solid pistols though.

Interesting, between the GP-100s and Security Sixes that I've handled, I've tended to prefer the Sec. Six. That may be perception though. Mind saying how the GPs are better balanced?

The RugerSS is awesome for the money and I really like the Colt Python
.357 Magnum, Revolver with 6" Barrel - godd luck finding one though.

I favor the Security Six - I have the four-inch model in blued finish. It'll take hot loads with no problem, and mine is smooth as the proverbial 'baby's behind'.
I like the looks of the Colt Trooper, but the Colts tend to be over-priced for what you get.

I've had a 4" stainless Security Six since shortly after they came out. Great revolver with a nice action out of the box. Fairly accurate as well. A little light honing to the trigger group to get rid of any burs will do wonders. Be carefull not to get overly agressive or single action will be too light and potentially dangerous.

BRG3, i prefer the extra weight out front that the GP100 has from the full length underlug. that couple extra ounces out front tend to make recoil more manageable- you might say less felt, or percieved recoil. just my opinion.

Ruger GP-100, a KGP-161 in fact. I like the way mine balances, trigger pull in both single and double action and it is very accurate. I put a Houge Mono-Grip on it and it does everything I ask of it.
It has been fed some really hot and heavy loads and it doesn't have any problem, in fact it seems to like "HOT & HEAVY" best as all my Ruger revolvers do.

Hmm, I don't prefer a barrel heavy revolver, quite the opposite. I'm looking for something that recoils as close to straight back as possible, but isn't barrel heavy. Maybe I'm asking for conflicting things here.

I'd be quite happy with a 5 shot revolver that had a thinner cylinder and a barrel lower in height compared to the trigger and grip. But all of those have short barrels and compact grips.

Might just have to settle for now and build later.

I had a Ruger .357 revolver. I can't remeber the model name, but it looked like this and was the best wheel gun I ever had.

This is what I have for a carry piece (4" barrel but it also comes in 6") and its the best wheel gun I have ever owned....with over 1,000 rounds now through it.
