Smith & Wesson new M&P auto.

I hear good things about the new M&P auto. However I have one comment which is certainly not meant to be critical. The gun is available in two forms a "civilian" mdl. with a magazine disconnect and a "police" mdl. without the disconnect. I know magazine disconnects have gotten a lot of bad press from the combat grues because you can't shoot that one round in an emergency during a reload. But I wonder?

In a former life (before I retired) I was a police officer and as such I frequently had prisoners in custody which of course required special caution with my handgun. For a while I had an assignment that meant I might have charge of as many as 5or 6 prisoners at once. After one experience which made me thankful for the weapons retention classes, I changed my weapon to a S&W mdl. 39 which has a magazine disconnect.

With the 39, I could take the magazine out and slip it in my pocket disabling the gun. The ability to do so really changed my mind about the desirability of a magazine disconnect.

This is just my opinion and perhaps it's now moot with so many handguns having key locks that an officer can engage when handling prisoners.

The 1 I carry at work doesn't have the disconnect, I guess it depends on your duty requirements.

I heard the same thing about the m&p series. HOwever I am a civilian who justbought a new(and my first) handgun. I choose the compact mp9 because of the ability to set it up for left handed shooting and because I could set it up for a small hand like mine. After I paid for it and was waiting my three days, I saw online that it would not be able to shoot with the mag out. I was a little leery thinking that maybe I should have gotten something diff. When I picked it up though I read on the port side a warning that it CAN shoot with the mag out. Just thought that I would throw that out there for info purposes.

I shot a MP40C today and i remembered this thread. So I dropped the mag out and pulled the trigger. Nothing. No click, No bang, nothing. Popped the mag back in and continued shooting like normal.
