Sight Paint

You guys have any ideas, thoughts experiences with those little tubes of sight paint you can buy at the gun shop. I don't know anything about it, I have a XD40 and it has just regular dovetail sights with white dots. I was thinking about painting them a color that is brighter or will glow in low light places. Should I just buy some Trijicons? Thanks guys

I use the sight paint on some of my mil-surp rifles, but it doesn't work as well as I'd like. It might be better on a handgun with the shorter sight radius.

The reason I hesitate to answer this question completely is my experience with Trijicon sights is with pistols that are from carry boxes, not carry pistols or revolvers. When it comes to night sights that have been through the rigors of everyday carry there may be a difference but the ones I have talked with that have them on carry guns recommend them.I carry a fixed sight 9mm hc that I have tried in fastdraw low light situations and shooting from conditioned reflex and am satisfied with the results so it is seldom I actually carry night sights.I like them and believe everyone should have night sights and Trijicon builds good ones but I dont know how they hold up to what a carry gun has to go through which is a lot different than being carried in a padded box.The problem is installed the price ranges up with a low priced lazer but they dont fail, lazers do. and you have to have an open sight anyway. sam.

Go on and paint the ones you have first and see how they turn out. It might turn out to be what you want.
Samuel mentioned conditioned reflex. Learn to point and shoot not aim and shoot and it want really make any differents in what kind of sites you have on your excellent pistol then.
Thats what the concealed carry Instructor taught the class I was in Point and Shoot.

I tried the paint on a Ruger SP-101. It didn't seem to help me at all.

I have tried both options and paint is what I'd recommend for several reasons.

Trijicon is good for a young man with good eyes. When my trijicon were new 15 years ago and my eyes still in their prime I would take the above desert eagle out night hunting coyote in the snow. Never got a shot off but I could see the sights very well.

My trijicon had a half life of 20 years but due to my middle age vision are useless now.

They were a spendy accessory.

But I've also painted and still do pistols, shotguns, rifles and that I can see so so in daylight. Don't buy the expensive sight paint just go to some craft store and pick up any color you like in the small bottles. The biggest tip is use fingernail hardener on the paint after it drys. Will last the hunting season for sure.

If you have to shoot at night or low light you can always use the police hold with the maglight flashlight held next to the pistol. You'll have to research the exact position I don't have a picture.

I appreciate the input guys. I think I might try painting them another color and see how well they are visible. The white is just not very bright so even in daylight they are hard to acquire.

Sight paint

For years I have used just plain old white out which works just fine night or day and you can get it anywhere

Get the one in a tube that has the roller ball tip

They (Testors) also make it in florescent orange. I've put it on my S&W 22A and my Kimber. Really shows up good. Quick front sight acquisition.

Sight paint

The night sights on my Springer are great at night, but the dots are small, so I might try some green on my front sight to help me in the daylight hours, to acquire better. I pick up green better than red. Just a dab while do you, try a toothpick. A Fiber optic front sight would be even better.

You guys must be mind readers, I have been chewing on this very problem ever since I took up shooting again. My eyes are a lot older than my guns. lol
Where can you find good Testers paint? Perhaps at a hobby or craft store? I think I'll check there tomorrow as I have one close to me.
This is why I love this forum, you guys are a great source of information and advice.

Thanks a bunch,

Snuffy

p.s. Do they make braille sights? lol

you use to be able to get it at Wal-mart. But craft stores carry it. Hobby shops here have an amazing selection.

See...this forum has practical value.

Just yesterday, while out shooting, I was talking with a buddy about the front sight on a lever gun that needs to be repainted...and viola here's a series of answers.

Thanks...

JBS,
Which of these Testers paints do ya recommend?

i want blaze orange.
all of my milsurps and those 3 handguns need it.
as a test i put a piece of B.O. tape on my raging bull front blade.
this pic was taken while the gun was being held in the shade in my office.

without it that black front blade was invisible.
