I wouldn't discount the 06 as a black bear rifle, with heavy well constructed bullets it is more than adequate for black bear. Wouldn't be my first choice for Griz though

I don't consider an 06 to be the best choice either that would be the limit on the low side. Feel way better about one of the mag rounds that .338 would be a charmer. By the way a 500lb black bear is a freaking monster if you are on to one that size your looking at possible record book for your area. The biggest I have ever seen taken was 6ft long and weighed in the 300s of course that was spring time but still if you gotta 500+- pounder tell him to use the .338

Black bear life history summaries have variously reported weights ranging from 88 to 400 lbs. for adult females, and 132 to 617 lbs. for adult males. Lengths have been reported as 51 to 75 inches for adult males and 43 to 67 in. for adult females and shoulder heights at 31 in. for females and 40 in. for males

A .454 will use .45 Colt and for recoil sensitive people the Cowboy Action ammo is real mild. You can get it in .44 also. sam.

If he is determined to take this bruin with an 06 make sure he is using a well constructed heavy bullet capable of deep penetration and reliable expansion. I hope he'll have a backup shooter with him in case the beast doesn't fall as expected.

Umm what do you mean you can't carry a pistol/revolver?? age restrictions are for purchase not use or possession.

I would imagine so unless your states hunting regulations say something about age for hunting with a handgun, Federal Law only pertains to age requirements for purchase not use or possession. You could lawfully possess one if received as a gift or an inheritance for example.

I had read accounts of hunters in Africa protecting their camps from lions with 12 ga shotguns and slugs. Can you take a bear down with a 12 ga. slug? Seems to me it would work.

It is possible and has been done TJ, but I'd want to make sure they were maximum loads! Better yet I'd like a handy .375 H&H if it were Griz country LOL

Well, like I said before...I think that the bear "problem" is overstated. And if you're going hunting for them the rifle ought to do the trick.

after retrieving a fired round from my .454 casull i am thinking you would have to break bone to stop an angry bear.
this one went through a 24 in. ponderosa stump and about 2 feet of hard packed gravel.
if it didnt hit bone it would be able to tear you to pieces and then die at its leisure.

it would be real hard to do a well placed shot in a moment of panic.
