Hello, my first time here. Just recieved a S&W 39-2 and disassembled it. I'm having trouble getting the decocking lever back in. Can anyone give me pointers on how to do so? Thanks

How did you get it off ? I have had a 39-2 since they first came out and have never had the decocking lever out of it. It's certainly not recommended for field stripping and cleaning. I always thought you had to take the rear sight off to get it out. If you do, you will find a way to disconnect the magazine safety under the sight. If you are talking about the slide lock that you have to take out to field strip the gun, you can easily get it back in by retracting the slide till the notch on the bottom of the slide (under "SS" in Smith & Wesson) lines up with the hole. When it's lined up just push the pin through. Let me know how you come out.

I've removed the decocking levers on both my 39-2 and 59 for detailed cleanings before. I don't have one of them in front of me and I'm having a hell of a time remembering the exact way to do it. It's not hard. The hardest part is the very small spring and ball that have to go in first and be held in place with a small flat piece of metal. I use a tiny screwdriver to hold down on the ball till the cocking lever just starts over it. If I remember correctly the decocking lever has to be turned at a strange angle till it's almost home.

Sorry I haven't got back with you. Thanks for the input. It finally went in but now the rod that goes through the spring is sticking out about a 1/2 in front of the barrel. I have no clue what is going on. I meant the slide lock, not the decocking lever! Last edited by jrknight; 01-03-2008 at 04:10 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Make sure the pin on the slide lock goes through the hole in the recoil spring guide.

I have a 39-2 that I carry on duty, love it. It is the same one my grandfather carried when he was sheriff. I have never had any kind of problem with it and would not get rid of it for any amount of money.

I switched to my 39 while I was assigned to court officer duty. The change was prompted by a disagreement with a prisoner over who should have my gun. It was easy to slip the magazine in my pocket when handling prisoners. I liked the magazine disconnect feature.
