Poll: vote for the 22 simi-auto:

Most reliable, to be used for plinking and as a cheap way to practice:

The Beretta U22 Neos?

The Walther P22?

Ruger, Mark 3?

The S&W 22A?

The Browning Buckmark?

I'm currently deciding between the Buckmark and the Mark 3. I'm leaning toward the Browning due to the replacable barrel and ease of reassembly.

The only one that I've shot is the S&W M22A. I love it. Made in Maine, great trigger, very accurate, and like a lot of different kinds of cheap ammo.

My vote of the choices given is my Browning Buckmark.
I have shot the earlier Ruger Mk.II and liked it, but I haven't handled the Mark III yet.
The Walther seems ammo sensitive, and is small for my hands.
I liked the S&W 22S, with the larger target grips.
I haven't even seen a live NEOS yet. It strikes me as a semi-copy of the classic Whitney Wolverine, which I have and love.

What is the difference between Ruger Mark II and a Ruger Mark III? What changes did they make to it?

Ruger added a loaded chamber indicator and put the mag release in the right spot. I traded my Ruger Mark III for a Buckmark. The Buckmark is very easy to maintain. Nothing wrong with the Ruger, but it is just a pain in the butt to clean. They both shoot reliably and accurately. The P-22 is a fun little pistol, but it is not that accurate and is kinda picky on ammo.

I don't have any experience with the S&W or Beretta.

Edit: I forgot to add that the P22 has a nasty little habit of sending spent "HOT" casings straight back into your lap, face, etc. Make sure you wear shooting glasses. Could be rough for women as well - wear a T-shirt!

I had a Walther P22 and sold it. The first and I hope that last time I sell a gun. I just didn't like it after I had it a while. Grip too small, and it wasn't what I had hoped for when I bought it.

I sold it when I bought my Sig Mosquito (not on your list). It is a nice gun of pretty good quality as far as I can tell. It is a little ammo picky (so was the P22) but it is fun to shoot and is as accurate as I can shoot. I use it mainly for cheap practice with a combate style handgun.

I will be adding a browning buckmark in the future and then I will be done with .22 pistols that I want to own. I hate the grip on the other guns you have listed none of them feel right to me like the buckmark's does.

Thumbs up Browning Buckmark

I had the Camper/Cocobolo grips w/7-1/4" barrel, with fiberoptic sights. Didn't like it... Sold it. My all time favorite is a Buckmark "slab side" with 4" barrel. It's a "hoot" to shoot. I did add a Hogue sleeve to "swell" the grip. (Large hands, size 11-1/2) I also have and shoot SIG Trailside 5", another fun gun that I will keep. Also have Bersa Firstorm 22 auto. It's probably my "third place" favorite. The Buckmark and the Trailside "single shot" load easily. (teaching "newbies" to shoot...)

My vote goes to the Browning but mine is the varmit with the big long barrel it soaks up what little recoil a 22 puts out and I can use a 1" paster for a target.(this is a scope only setup)

I've shot the Rugar Mark 3 and I own the Beretta Neos. The Neos was my 2nd handgun purchase. All five of the guns you have listed in the poll was laid before me when I was looking for my 22 for target practice. I handled them all and I kept going back for the Beretta, I love how it fits my hand and I have found it to be fun to shoot and accurate. I have heard comments about it looking like a space gun, or it's weird looking etc but personally I LOVE it. It's reasonably priced and not particular on the ammo. So my vote is definitely the Neos.

Thanks for all the info guys, with the cost of ammo going up, I think I will be getting a .22 handgun to practice with soon.

Add my vote for the Buckmark.
My son has a Ruger and both are equal in accuracy and function but the Buckmark is easier to strip, clean and reassemble. Check the fit and feel in your hand. We also have a S&W 22A. Not as tight or accurate as the Ruger and Buckmark but good deal for the lower price. 22A does not fit my hand well but others like it. I think it may be better for smaller hands. I have big hands with short fingers.

Out of the box the buckmark isnt the best because of the trigger pull but the trigger is easily lowered. The Ruger and 22A come with lower triggers out the box however the 22A is poorly made and prone to cycling issues. The Beretta has the worst stock trigger I have tested. The Rugers are too complicated but have the best triggers out the box. Almost none of my collection is left in stock condition because every gun can easily be improved. The Buckmark is a tinkerers dream with a fantastic aftermarket. Any shooter can take a buckmark and create a great target pistol. Plus the buckmark has many models to choose from. But don't limit yourself to just one 22 because they are all great fun to shoot. Many shooters sadly overlook the 22 entirely.

Yeah! Just what I wanted to talk about. Academy has the S/W 22 A for 199.00. The Browning Camper is next on my list, has great sight's. I want some thing small like a Walther, they are supposed to be made better. It is small and it fits the wife. I want a stainless P-22 that shoots like my Springer. So what about the 22 A?
