Suggestions for hogs

Ok, working with what I got, what is the best ammunition to protect against a wild hog while in the woods? I have a full size .45acp 1911, 3" .357, 3" .44 special, and 3" .40s&w. I know fmj is the best, but I'm looking for specific brands.

I would have to go with the .357 or the .45 with + P loads. And I would also opt for heavy hollow points that would put that pork down quick..them can be nasty !!

The .357 with heavy cast bullets or your .44 with the same will take care of hogs.

A charging hog, especially a mature specimine, is a major safety and health disaster in the making. I would recommend an automatic or twin barrel 12 gauge loaded with a good, heavy slug. If affordable, I would recommend a double rifle in a heavier caliber. You may find yourself needing heavy hitting put down power.

I just don't think a handgun against a charging hog is a good idea but it is certainly more valuable than any lesser altenative as few humans can outrun a charging hog.

BBT,with what you have I would stay away from them,12 ga. with slugs is my choice,if you must,.357 with a heavey hard cast slug,and keep an eye out for trees to climb!

I tend to agree with the 12g option. In the heat of the moment even the best shot can miss way too easy with a hand gun.

But to tell the truth, the best protection weapon is the one you have in your hand at the time! If that is all you have then start shooting and don't stop till you hear a click instead of a boom!

.357 or .44 is what I'd choose, in that order.

Here's a website with some powerful ammo. Cor-bon is good, too. Be careful--this should only be shot in arms in good condition rated for +P. They do have standard stuff as well for lower pressure variants.

12 ga with no. 4 buck and then a slug and alternate. In a good pump thats fast to work.

I've been hunting and hikeing in woods down here in the south for 46 years and never once have I or anyone I know been attacked by a wild hogs.
The Hog hunters that use dogs are the one's that get attacked sometimes because they move in close when the dogs tree the hog.
Yes it's possible to get attacked but there going to be as scard of you as you are them and try to run away.
But I agree you should always take a gun with you when you go to the woods to kill snakes and crazy people that might want to do you harm and just maybe that 1.5% chance a Hog does decide to carve you up...A.H

Thanks for the replies, I'm gonna be hiking with some friends and there are hogs in the area. A rifle or shotgun is kinda out of the question as we are going into the woods for some nature photography and I'll also have to carry the camera equipment. I carry Federal 180gr hp in my .357 so I guess I'll just stick with that.

my friend actually unloaded his smith and wesson 5906 into a possum and didnt die that quickly

watch out for those hogs, go for the head shot or right between the shoulder blades
