public safety concerns

Wondering if there are any .380 and .40 ammo out there that would decrease the risk of passing through a target and hitting non-targeted objects? That is a concern of mine when I and my husband carry concealed and, God forbid, if we are ever faced with having to use the gun in a public setting.

practice

MrsS: Ma'am; much could and will be said about this subject.

Ballstically: anything traveling at 400fps and up can subjectively pass through.
So much will depend on the impact area. Much will depend on how close or far away the target is.
Ma'am the risk is always there. Without question; hit center mass; hit chest wall, let the organs, and bones absorb the bullet.

I want to say a lot more about this subject, I'll refrain, other than to say;

Ma'am: all of us need to practice and practice wisely. Then practice some more.

You want a good mushroom

In either caliber you want expansion to such a degree the
bullet will impart maximum energy to the target and not
penetrate through to the other side of the target. In the real world
this will never be totally possible so you should do some
research on what bullet design makes the largest mushroom
(expansion). That will vastly increase the probablility of
non-penetration/maximum energy impartation.

There are several different types of frangible ammo made expressly for this purpose. They dump all of their energy in the target but won't pass through the body. Some of the brands that come to mind are Glaser, Bee-Safe, and Magsafe. I think Cor-Bon makes a version as well.

The odds are much greater that you will miss your target and hit someone instead of your bullet going through someone and then hurting an innocent person.

Use hollow points and be aware of your target and its surroundings.

Glaser's work perfectly! I have used them for many years, and can attest to their ability to break up in the target!

Can I purchase Glaser's or any other of the aforementioned ammo at a sporting store/gun shop or must they be special ordered? Thanks for the feedback, by the way!

This is what I'd recommend:

73120 - Safety Slug, Silver, 40 Smith & Wesson, 115 Grain, 1550 Feet Per Second, 613 Muzzle Energy, 6 Pack - Manufactured by: Glaser

It might be hard to find at a local store, buying online is probably your best bet.

Good call for your concern; here's a good online link to the safety slugs

Dakota Ammo -- Glaser 1-800-626-7266

Any round can overrpenetrate...best policy is to hit the target and not worry about it....Use a good hollowpoint or hi-performance ammo.

Best of luck.

Really great info,wrong but great.They even have a magsafe bullet for the .223rem. that they can take one person out in a crowd and not hit anyone else.I saw it used on tv once where they shot the gun out of a mans hand and never harmed him or anything else.It has been totally possible for years. sam.

Sam is correct all the way! As I said, I CAN attest to their ability to break up IN the target! MrsS, I buy my Glaser's at my local Gun Shop. Read here:
