I'd definitely look at revovlers if you're new to handguns. A .357mag revolver will allow you to carry plenty of power, yet also use .38special ammo in the same gun for cheaper practice.

If you feel that you must have a semi-auto, then I would look at some new striker fired handguns, like the XD, SR-9, or my favorite, the S&W M&P.

Good Luck

In my opinion, I'd take the M&P over a Glock. It is no longer a debate or reliability. There have been 20,000+ round stress tests done on the M&P, and they've passed with flying colors. They're made in America, have a lifetime warranty, and fit in ones hand like a 1911. For me, the biggest turn off from the glock was how it felt in my hand, and the price. The M&P is easily $200 cheaper.

There are many good handguns/firearms out there but not as many that will fit you correctly. Try as many as possible before buying and see which fit you.
