| Senior Member | Repairing and refurbishing section Why don't we have a section specifically devoted to those members attempting to restore weapons ? I recently came across some older walnut grips for various pistols and the grips are almost black with crud and accumulated oil and grease. What would be a chemical or method to remove this debris so I can refinish the grips in their natural color. I have experienced this very problem with two SKS rifles and a Swedish Mauser. Automotive paint stripper does a pretty good job, but there must be a more effective/efficient method. Any thoughts or suggestions ? Doc Last edited by Doctor Larry K; 03-26-2008 at 08:56 PM. | Senior Member | oven cleaner is used to strip usgi stocks on M1's and M14's for restoration. I have used it on nasty old S&W grips, then a light sanding and tung oil.

| Senior Member ![]() | I generally take the old finish off (and any crud) with regular paint remover and a soft bristle brass brush. This may take several applications. I then use Murphy's. After they are dry I stain them with a walnut stain and put a coat of satin polyurethane on with a small brush.
