Wow. Thanks for all of the replies, guys! I'm gonna need a little time to mull all of this over, but I'll give you all an update when I've made my decision (Or am getting closer.)

The only concern I have with the 357's is I've heard they have a ton of kick. It's not that I'm worried about breaking my wrist or anything, but I'm not sure how easy one of those would be to shoot compared to a .44 or something. What do you think?

If you buy a .357, you can shoot 38spl in it. Low cost and recoil. As recommended, look at the Dan Wessons, you can super deals on the .357 revolver, very nice guns.

Let me get this straight, you are worried about the recoil on a 357 but are considering a 44 mag? And the thread seems to indicate your predisposal to shorter barrels, like 4". If you think a 357 has recoil, don't even think about 44 mag. Recoil is directly related to bullet weight. About the smallest you can easily find for a 44 is 180 gr. (I think Corbon has a 165) with the normal being 240 gr. The 38/357 commonly starts at 110-124 with 180 gr. being the upper end of commonly available. Yeah, I know there's a few 200's available for handloaders. This means that the lightest bullets for the 44 will be in the range of the heaviest for the 357. The 44 mag will recoil more. I shoot a GP-100-6" , a Magna-ported 7 1/2" Super Blackhawk and a Super Blackhawk Hunter, 7 1/2" with scope. Those big single action 44's recoil a lot more than the 357 (even with the porting or the heavy scope). With a GP-100 or 686,both fairly heavy guns, you can use 38 spl wadcutters or semi-wadcutter target loads for practace. These will feel about like a 22 pistol. You still have the option of the heavier and hot load stuff for hunting and defense. With the 44 you can go down to 44 SPL but they are still fairly heavy loads , harder to find and more expensive. The only real advantage for the 44 mag is for hunting. If you don't hunt with a handgun, there is little practical reason to use a 44 mag. unless you just want to have it. That is emotion not logic.
