thats how i feel about glocks.great guns. but i don't like the boxed look.what about barrel length. i like the shorter barrel, does it cut down on the recoil?

no. Shorter barrels have a sharper recoil as there is less gun to absorb it. OR something like that. Longer barrels also give you more velocity and better aim.

see that's what i'm talking about.do certain manufacturers have common defects?
It's not so much defects, but like any mechanical device, if used hard and or abused they will wear out. Take the Colt 1911/1911A1 for instance. If given hard service (read high round counts) the disconnector nose can wear causing a dangerous condition, you could wind up with a seven shot full auto in your hand.

Glock 17. There are a lot of good used ones out there. I have bought used first models for as little as 300.00. High cap mags can still be had cheep. If you are not very familar with guns find someone who is and take them with you. You will find most gun owners are very willing to help a new guy out. Also some good deals on Sigs right now. The West German Police trade-ins can be had for around 300.00. Good luck and be patient.

In my experience, you can't go wrong with a Ruger P Series. They have a very good record for reliability and accuracy. You should also take a look at the surplus Sig P-225\P-6's on the market right now.

Try a Springfield XD9. Accurate out of the box, comfortable for most people, comes with lots of accessories, easy to maintain. Check one out.

Beretta 92.

I've got glocks, S&W,SA,Taurus,Kimber,Ruger,Dan Wesson,etc.

They all go bang, and some are nicer than others, but my beretta 92fs is the most comfortable to shoot. Most accurate, and definitely the smoothest gun of all that i've owned and shot.

Taurus makes a clone, but the Beretta just has a better feel to it and seems to be made better.

Big Tool, I agree Beretta 92 is amazing. But having owned the Taurus PT92 and the Beretta, the only difference I could tell was the safety location and the brand name.

Well if you owned both then you would know more about the Taurus than i would for sure.

I love my Taurus 1911, but what it boiled down to for me was i wanted a stainless 92 and the Taurus was way too shiney for me. I usually like shiney, but the finish on the Taurus just wasn't for me.

The taurus does have a better laid out saftey. Either are great.

yeah, mine were black, not much for shiney guns. They are both great guns. The Beretta has a much better resale value...

I also have two Tauruses PT92 and PT100. they are both fine pieces. I also had a Charles Daly 9mm, browning copy that I also love.

Don't forget to visit your local pawnshops.
I have to agree about the P9R and the PJK. I bought a P9R for my wife. we've put ALOT of ammo through it. never a problem. its accurate and new in the box was only 225. at a gun show.

I own a S&W M&P 9mm Fullsize (4.25" Barrel), and it shoots like a dream. I'm not sure what they would cost used, or how easy it would be to find a used one. They get great reviews, and are very accurate/reliable.

I bought mine for $450 new, but I'm sure you could find a used one for $3xx.

Lol, I'll go along with Squirrel. While never owning a CZ-75, I will admit that they are one of the best 9mm handguns ever made.

9MM

Howdy Eddm,

I would stick with a reputable gun shop in your area. They have a good selection of guns on hand and feel them all. Find one that is comfortable in your hand. Then test fire, if you can rent one. I have gone thru several brands and styles before finding my personal favorites. I have purchased both new & used, & from gun shops to gunbroker.com. I prefer S&W, Ruger, Colt & Springfield Armory. Remember one thing in your quest, you are buying the gun so make it fit-Your Hand and Your Budget. Once you get one, keep it well maintained and it will provide good service for you. I prefer steel framed ones. I own one glass framed, SW40F. It's ok, but I personally prefer the 1911 platform. I own and shoot 6 1911's, mfgd from 1918 to 2006. 3 Colts and 3 Springfields, all .45 ACP's. I have 11 single actions and 4 double actions, and from 9MM to .45 ACP to .45 LC to 30 Caliber Carbine. I enjoy shooting and basically do Cowboy Action for competition. I just completed a Police Combat shoot for Charity. Find a competition that you like and expand. Good Luck in your Quest!
