| Thinking of a 9mm
I'm new to this site so let me say hi to everyone. Ok heres the deal. I don't or have ever owned a handgun(have shot some before). I plan on purchasing my first handgun within the week or so. So a question for the people who know there guns. I want a 9mm handgun but not sure what make or model. I am planning on spending around $350 (could give or take some). Any recomendations for this price range? Thanks for the help ahead of time.

i would get a .38 special revolver as your first but if you have your heart set on a 9mm get a springfield xd, a ruger, not a glock (just dont), or something along those lines everything else is kinda expensive, maybe a bersa or taurus |

Yea i do have my heart set on a 9mm. Have always wanted one since i shot my brothers a couple of years ago. Is there any 9mm guns that you would NOT recommend do to less quality? Or is it the same as all other things, "you get what you pay for"? Just curious.

i would feel safe with any reputable gun company, i would probably try to buy used in that price range. you say you have shot some before so im guessing you know that you would prefer a semi auto over a revolver. i wouldnt argue with you over that unless you where gona use for personal protection without using your gun enough to get to know it.

Try to rent and shoot the guns you're thinking about at a gun range first and see how you like it. Then make your decisions. Yes you do get what you pay for, and don't listen to the Glock haters. Try out as many as you can, though with that price range you might not be able to afford a Glock unless you buy it off somebody used (not in a gun store).

That is true. Glocks cost more than i wanna spend at the moment. I never thought about renting guns at the gun range. Do they just need the basic paper work to rent guns?

You'll fill out the paperwork and everything at the range. Just bring some ID and probably your own ammo. Give your range a call and they'll tell you what you need.

all good advice above. your price range puts you in a ruger. if you choose a semi first, train your self with it well and or shoot with experienced friends. same goes for a revolver.

Not sure if the ranges where you live are different, but 3 of the 4 ranges I've been to required that you purchase their ammo. The fourth allowed you to bring your own non-corrosive ammo, but also had ammo available for purchase. | |

Get a Taurus pt92. Absolute best 9mm i've handled under 600bucks. 17rd capacity, da/sa Trigger, great saftey/decocker system, based on a proven design, good trigger pull, has tactical rail. Just bought one brand new 400.00 out the door taxes included. I've got a xd, glock, beretta 92, and the Taurus simply can't be beat for the price. |

I love my Beretta 92. It feels really good in my hand. It is very reliable. After the first shot and your shooting DA the trigger is extra smooth and light. I paid $250 used for mine.

Since I don't own a 9mm and I pretty much stick to my .380 and .38 special, I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and agree with Texas T's first post. Good luck in your search!

You can get a Taurus Millennium for $325. I have seen them less on line but you have to pay your dealer to receive it. I feel that is one of the very best guns in the lower price range. If you can save up a little longer you will open your choices way up. My main carry gun is a Springfield XD which I think is the very best gun for the dollar. You can ask a million people and get a million answers and none of them are really wrong. Most ranges will rent the popular brands. If you must keep it under $350 I would say Millennium is the way to go. Kel Tec is another good one in that price range. I still feel Springfield is the way to go if you are willing to spend the extra money. No matter what you do I would run out of any dealer who tries to sell you a High Point.

I would check out Bud's Gun Shop on line. They have a great selection and the best prices I have seen anywhere. Here are their 9MM's. Advanced Category Search=

I just bought my first semi auto handgun. Its a Kel Tec p-11 9mm. For the $350 you can buy a new one, extra mag/s, finger extension(a must have for me), holster and ammo and likely have a little left over. Id say you definetely at least want to hold a few and see how they feel. I wanted a compact lil pistol for when I get a ccw permit. Ive heard many LEO's use the kel tec's as back up weapons.

I second the "try before you buy" advice. If you can't find a range that rents, try going through a local gun club or finding a friend of a friend. Any of the major manufacturers make a good product. Which one is right for you has so many variables that only trying some out will lead you in the right direction. I would recommend waiting until you can spend somewhere in the $500 to $600 range (slightly less if buying used). Lots of realy good pistols in that price range: Glock, S&W M&P, XD, etc. |
