Colt 1991 A1 Compact .45 acp, AND a flashight. (See the thing about the guy who killed his fiance' the night before their wedding? Heard someone moving in the house, got up to check, fired on the human shape, thought she was till in bed, she wasn't)

Half awake and safeties and all I use a Ruger Bkackhawk 357 single action. No need to worry about a safety. Use snake shot too, but not all.

I am amazed at how well they are designed...
...and how well they perform in crisis.

Colt 1911 Officers model and a .38 as a backup...
(And a blindingly bright flashlight to get someone's attention with...that doubles nicely as a club....)
All things considered, I really would rather them leave under their own power or in police custody and not bleed on my carpet, but chance favors the prepared mind.

I don't sleep with a gun under the pillow, as I would likely knock it off into the floor, but I do keep an 18" Rem 870 leaned up against the head board, a SA 1911, and two .357 Mags on the TV stand.

I second the flashlight. Actually I keep that closer than my guns! Always have a 3 D cell Maglite w/ LED on the nitestand, the bell sure helps from losing it in mid-swing =)

S&W 642 Airweight with Crimson Trace grips.
Replaced my Ruger GP100 .357 (too big), which replaced my Glock 21 (prefer revolvers for HD).
GP100 and G21 are still close by.
