| TEC9 Jam-O-Matic?
I've been considering picking up a TEC9 for a shtf / conversation piece for my collection. I know a lot of them are notorious for jamming. Any solution to this? I've generally fixed problems like this in the past by using good brass and thoroughly polishing the receiver and ejection port.

I've fired six Tec-9s since they first came out and only one fired with out jamming every other round, it was one a friend who owed me money traded me. I wasn't interested in it but gave him $300 towards what he owed me. I sold it to another friend for $300 because he just had to have it.
Personally I don't know of any gunsmith who will work on one and most gun people treat them with disstain at the very mention of one. Best just to buy a reliable pistol for a SHTF senario or something that won't be a "you bought a Tec-9? BwaaaHaaa" conversation.

Funny, I shot one a long time ago, when they first came out, and never had one jam.
Might be the ammo being used? Might be that it was in need of a good cleaning.
But hey, what you expect for a gun that cost all but what, $200 bucks? lol
But like I said, the one I got to shoot never jammed once. Maybe it was a fluke? Or, it could have been the fact that the person who owned it cleaned it on a regular basis and used good quality ammo.

And for the life of me I haven't a clue as to why this is. I mean, AK's have gotten the same bad anti-gun treatment and publicity and yet they get bought and sold like crazy and most gunsmiths have no problem working on them.
And I would think a gunsmith would be like any other gun owner and enthusiast and know it's not the gun that's doing the killing.
But I'm sure there is one or two out there that would work on them, but then, they're not all that hard to work in. Pretty basic if you ask me...
On a side note, like I said they were all but what, $200 bucks when they first came out or shortly after? I can't remember. Just know I was offered a brand new one for $190 bucks. lol
The side note, there was one for sale, along with it's sister, the AB-10, at a recent gun show I went to and the Tec-9 had a $500 price tag on it. I looked at it, then when I knew and saw I had the sellers attention, I said, $500 bucks, YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. I thought gun shows were about finding deals, not ripping people off. Then I put it down and casually walked away...
On a side side note, lol, I'm about done with gun shows until things get somewhat back to normal. I mean, I doubt they'll ever get back to what they were "pre-Obama, but unless or until they get back to somewhat normal, I'm about done with gun shows.

I was going to buy one a while back but heard the same thing. It jams more than it doesn't. Then I thought "What will I use this for?". I'd rather put the money into a gun I will use.

AK's are reliable and have the reputation to back it up, Tec-9s have a reputation for being jam o' matics and rightly so.
I've seen people bring Tec-9s, ABs, and Tec 22s to the two local gunsmiths to try fixing the jamming problem and none will work on them. When asked, it was mainly due to the fact that they couldn't get parts and it would cost way more than the gun was worth or what the gunowner was willing to pay for machining parts.
The same two gunsmiths will work on AKs, but an AK needing repair are few and far between. Mainly people just have them order new funiture or like me have them machine a flashhider to fit.

That's a shame. I wish I knew enough about it to work on it safely and turn it into a nice firing weapon. I have a feeling it has to do with the quick-and-dirty nature of these guns. It seems to me, after talking with several TEC9 owners, that the problem is a interesting combination of things.
Rack the gun, get ready for fun (**being sarcastic**). The gun wants to shove the next bullet up from the magazine and into the pipe before the other round has a chance to be ejected. In fact, it does this operation with such lightning speed that the first round itself can become jammed. I'm guessing one of the designers fell asleep in high school physics when everyone else was learning what spring constants are and how springs work. Additionally, it would seem that from the design itself, it's also like trying to force a square peg in a round hole.

Try going to www.ktog.org
it's a Kel-Tec Forum and the folks there are very knowledgable and helpfull.
Aset of Wlffe springs or a good polishing of the feed ramp may be all you need. They're easy to work on yourself. Good Luck.

110% More reliable than a TEC9, comes with an accessory rail, more concealable, and is available with Happy Sticks in 9mm, .40SW, and .45ACP.
Oh, and no gunsmithing, finetuning, or extra parts buying required to make it work.
Im not an advocate of spray and pray but 33+1 rounds well aimed pistol fire cant not help in a SHTF situation.
Now if u want a collectors piece, well thats something different I guess but in my expirience there is a reason why collector pieces/queen safes are not the war/work horse pieces.

While I'll agree parts are expensive, the reason is because the guns themselves are no longer made. And the person that bought the rights to make the parts, linked below, can set his own price. And because people have paid those prices, he'll keep them there.
But, parts are available. New Page 1
And again, proper lubrication, with a proper and thorough cleaning first of course, can make a world of difference. And using quality ammo is another thing that should be done.
And, wideym, to be blunt, it sounds to me as if you just hate them for whatever reason? And you have that right. There are a lot of junk guns out there. I think Hi-points are junk and not worth the money. But others like them and shoot the crap out of 'em. Same goes for the Tec's. Some people shoot the crap out of 'em and have no problems. While others do. To each their own.
Mine is based on the fact the one I shot worked great and the people I know with them or that had them never have or had any issues. But again, they thoroughly and properly cleaned and lubricated and used hi end ammo...
And personally, I like the way they look with the barrel extension on. I think that's another main reason many hate them. Cuz they look scary wicked? lol

I don't dislike them simply because the way they look (they actually look kinda cool), just how 5 of the 6 I've shot performed...badly. I won't own a gun that is not consistently reliable, that's why I'm getting rid of an HK 93, because it jams just about every fourth round.
I know every gun manufactorer will have a percentage of crap guns come off the assembly line, but the Tec series seemed to have way more than most.
