Powder Scales

Anyone have any thoughts on digital vs. balance beam scales? I was browsing Midway and it seems like to get a well rated quality scale I am looking at $80 or more anyway. To me the appeal of a digital scale is having that exact number there and in theory being able to re-zero it.

Lee does appear to have a $30 beam scale but it doesn't seem to have taken well.

What scales do you use and are they digital/balance beam?

Thanks

After 20 years of reloading I finally switched to a digital scale this year. Now the only thing I wonder is why I didn't do it sooner.

If you do switch to digital or even for a balance beam scale, I would recommend having a set of calibrated weights.

Below is the scale I bought and with calibrated weights, it is always dead on.

If want to go the balance beam route, I've heard good things about this one.

We had this discussion not too long ago, and a while before that, too. Maybe some mod could just copy that whole thing here and save us all a lot of typing.

For now, just go here:

Must have missed it when I looked through the reloading threads.

The beam and pan assembly on that is the exact item found on the Ohaus 510, very much like the Ohaus 505, sold as the XXXXXX 505 by various marketers with different color paint. The Ohaus model is tan, RCBS sells it in green, etc. Great balance!

I also use an old balance scale. They are simple, never out of zero, and always work.

The Ohaus 505 style scales will always work and be correct.

It's the only one I use!

I bought a digital scale. Used it once. It has been in the box for 6 years, since.

Probably ought to change out the battery about now, then.

Are we having ANOTHER digital vs. beam balance discussion?

I like digital.

Aside from missing the obvious thread where this was last discussed, my intent wasn't to spark a which is better debate, merely to see what scales are in use by those reloading here on a regular basis, find out the things they like/dislike about them.

No batteries. It operates on 110 volt. It can not be plugged in to a socket that has anything else plugged in. It can not be on the same circuit as a flourescent light. It has to be warmed up for a half hour before use. It has to be calibrated each time you plug it in.

In other words, it is a real PITA to use, AND it is only accurate to 0.1 grain. I can do much better and faster with my 505 Beam Balance, and a powder trickler.

The accuracy to a tenth of a grain always bothered me. I know a few loaders that use digital. I really prefer my beam and pan though.

I started with a Balance Beam scale and will die with one (or more) I guess. I now Have the Lyman 1000 scales thanks to member Jimkim and I love it. I have had digital scales for weighing food and Gold nuggets fail on me or go crazy...I just do not trust them for weighing gunpowder. I'm Old school I guess...
