Hello, I have a Savage Precision Carbine in 308. It has a 20" barrel and a 1 in 10 twist. I plan on using 168 grain Nosler BT's to hunt whitetails with this year. Have any of you used these for hunting before? If so, do you have any good load data? I have on hand Varget, CFE 223, Ramshot TAC, and H335. Thanks for all your help.
Well you lucky dawg, Graf and sons threw in a Ramshot reloading manual in my last order. Unfortunately they used a barrel with a 1-12 twist , but maybe the load is still good.
They got 39.9 grains for a muzzle velocity of 2516, up to 44.3 gr for 2759 fps. COL of 2.800".
They also threw in an Accurate manual if you want to try, AA# 2460,2495, or 2520.

check your PM.
did not want to post on older data...... they now figure the powder too slow for that bullet weight for some reason....it's now only listed for heavier projectiles....

I use them in my 30-06 but they're 165 grain. Haven't had a deer do anything but drop on the spot when shot with one.
I took the largest mule deer of my hunting experience with a 168 gr. BT handloaded into a 30-06. The bullet expanded to about 0.625" going thru both shoulders and stopping just under the skin of the off side. The range was 96 yards. The deer weighed after being field dressed 245 lbs and had horns with 7 points per side almost perfectly matched. The spread was 31". My neighbor a senior Nevada Game Warden said he was sure it was the third highest scoring head from Nevada taken that year. I have taken other big game with BTs and I am a firm believer in their use. ........... Big Cholla

Reason: It was the 168 gr. version.

Thanks Chriss, I'll have to give it a try. I don't have any 760 on hand but I have used the 780 Supreme in some short mags with great success.
Inthesouthwoods, I am using 39.0 IMR 4895 and 168 gr. Nosler BT in my M1As for deer in the woods of Putnum Co. It is a very accurate load in these rifles and knocks our Georgia Whitetails flat with these short in the woods shots. This is an accurate and effctive mild load that functions flawlessly in the gas op.
In the .308 M700 5R I am loading 42.5 IMR 4895 and switched to the 165 Sierra Gameking SBT.
Varget is good and so is IMR3031. Used both Hornady 168 gr A-Max and Hornady 165 gr SST - both will water your eyes when it comes to accuracy - all holes touched at 100 yds. IMR3031 is my standard powder for .308 and .223 when I reload. The Varget was for my son's friend when he bought his very first rifle and I reloaded a batch with the components he brought over. I used the left over powder to do a small run and was very impressed with the results.
Lastly, we can't deer hunt with rifles here in Ohio so I just poke holes in paper at 100 or more yards. I'm originally from the Southwest and you absolutely can use a rifle when deer hunting. I miss those days.
