| Super Moderator ![]() | What are YOUR best shots? We all hear about how accurate or inaccurate rifles are supposed to be. Then we hear that no one's really that accurate themselves. Me, I'm relatively new to the activity (two years), so I have more of an excuse to stink. My most accurate shots were something like 1.25" to 1.5" apart at 120 yds. That's almost MOA. They weren't dead center, because the scope wasn't adjusted for the ammo. The rifle was an FA-91 G3 clone by Century, the scope was a Tasco 3-9x40mm mounted on the receiver's integral rail, the ammo was 168gr Winchester Supreme Match. I let the barrel cool down for about two minutes between shots, and I think it was summer time. I have yet to get such a group again. I have consistently fired 2" groups at 50yds with NATO ammo. Second to that was the time I hit a pop bottle in the neck at 50yds with my then new Savage 300 RUM with open sites. Above where I was aiming, but that's because the sites were calibrated for a different distance. With open sites, I can hit targets about 6" wide at 50yds consistently with a friend's Mini-14, and about the same with his universal M1 Carbine. I tried shooting a Bum Laden target with my SKS-D and the shots were all over the place. Short site radius maybe? My Yugo usually gets under 4" at 50yd. Same with my Garand. With seemingly unlimited ammo, I kept running mags through my scoped 10-22 at 50yd, eventually putting one big 2" hole in my friend's board. I tend to be able to hit groundhog (Barney) sized targets pretty much dead center at about 20 yds with a shotgun using bead sites. With an open choke, I managed to hit a chipmunk at around 20yds. How does this look in the grand scheme of things? What have your proudest shots been? And what can I aspire to before I outshoot my rifles and everyone else's? Any ideas of specific improvements? My eyes tend not to work well with most open sites

| Coming home from squirrel hunting, and needing one or two more to make my limit. Saw a big Fox squirrel makin'-bacon with a little grey squirrel - I never knew they "cross-polinated"! Aiming at the big boy, I blew the little grey out from under him - ruined his day! He scampered off (really mad at me, I'm sure!) and I added his girlfriend to the bag. Dang, thought sure I'd get both . . .

| When I was 14, almost 40 yrs ago, I went out with some friends to the sand pits, a site out away from any developed neighborhoods. One of my buddies brought a bow and arrows and a single shot 22. I had a Sheridan air rifle. He shot an arrow out into the mud, then proceded to miss it with his 22 several times. After laughing at him, he invited me to try. First shot cut the arrow half way up. In disgust, he handed me his 22, and said here, try this. First shot cut the arrow off at the surface of the mud! I never let on how much luck was involved, but the look on his face was priceless. |

| Senior Member | well the one that amazed me most was i taped a quarter to a small empty mushroom can and put it out my the dumpster buy the pond we had at the time, and went back to the porch (about 60 yards away) and sat down with my bohm 22 magnum single action revolver with a 4 inch barrel and shot once at it,the wife i had at the time called me back in the house and i didnt think i hit it anyway so i went in. well a hour or so later i took the trash out and i picked up the can to throw it in the trash and just off center of that quarter was a 22 caliber hole! i was amazed to say the least! lol

| A buddy and I were shooting milsurps at the range. We found one of those funky little "bowling pins" that's about three inches tall = part of a kid's game. He put it up on a target frame, and proceeded to miss it with his pistol. I took my MAS 49/56 and shot it - we found a few splinters! Pretty accurate at 25 yards! Later he was shooting his M44 Mosin, and a bird alit on the barbed wire fence about 50 yards away - before I could stop him, BANG! The wire snapped apart and the bird disentegrated! Pretty good shot, though I chewed him out for his "illegal hunting". When I got my Ruger M77 Varminter in .22-250, I had read that they were capable of 3/8" groups, so I had to try it. It took me about 80 rounds in 3-round groups (good Ballistic tip handloads) but I finally did it! I haven't managed it since. The rifle is amazing, I'm so-so.

| Growing up my brother and I would put sticks of Dentyne gum on a barb of the barbed fence we had out back. From about 30 yards, or so, we would shoot them off with the .22 of a Savage 24. Granted not too many pieces of gum were damaged but we did manage to hit a few. The 24 always was a super accurate gun.

| What matters is the group size, 5 shots that you would be willing to bet a year's pay on that you can deliver, ANY time, wind, rain, snow, cold, heat, etc. That group will be a LOT larger than the best LUCK shots you ever put together, count on that. Yet betting a year's pay is NOT the same as betting your life, and sometimes, you ARE betting your life, on a rifle shot in combat. I once shot a quail out of the air with a .22 match autopistol, after several times missing them at closer ranges, sitting! :-) I've shot several other birds out of the air with a .22 rifle, and probably never tried such for over 100 shots. Luck hits do occur. Remember, tho, hit or miss is like heads or tails of a coin toss. 5050 chance is luck. If you can't do something at LEAST 6 x out of 10tries, it's luck. Vegas is waiting for those who "think" otherwise. |

| Why oh why..... Quote:
You did read the question didnt you? The question was not, "what is the best group youconsistantly achieve?" You can read I assume as you can type, but your pompous overbearing diatribe is once again as relative to the question as an accordian is to rock bands.... You did do a very good job of overstating the obvious, even if it was way off point.....

| what u give a crap, anyway? Because I DO point out when guys like you are BULLSHITTING about some super duper LUCK shot? Cooper says you should APOLOGIZE for long shots, because you were too inept or lazy to get closer. |

| Allright When did I say anything about the topic? And is Cooper there? Did he know the situation? Have you ever seen open desert? I'm through with you. Nevermind.

| Super Moderator ![]() | Luck shots and consistent groupings are both within my purposes in posting this thread. I agree with OY about knowing what kind of accuracy you can bet your life on, but for Pete's sake, quit insulting people.

| One of my favorites is throwing a couple boxes of empty shotgun shells out into a pond. My buddy and I bet a case of beer on who could sink the most in a row. I won at 10, but that's only because the 10/22 ran out and reloading broke my groove. That and the old classic of taking shots at a clay pigeon on a hill a couple hundred yards away.

| Well as far as my best shots go, here is the list: Ruger 10/22: Consistant 1/2" groups at 100 yards with 4x scope, best group 3/8" at 100 yards Savage 93 .17HMR: Consistant 7/16" groups at 100 yards with 3-9x Scope, best group was about 1/8" at 100 yards with CCI ammo Remmington 870 20g: Average of 1.5" groups at 75 yards with ironsights using lightfield hybrid sabots, best group about 7/8" at 75 yards. I have a new savage 111 chambered in .308win that I am going to be testing soon, first few rounds fired through it look pretty accurate so I gotta spend some time sighting in scope to get some constant idea of shot placement. |

| Senior Member | Coyote shot at 400 yards with a 7mm mag -- my dad. No this isn't a Dewman story. If my dad was still alive I would put his markmanship against any good story teller. I watch this man put five shots under a nickle size at 100 yards with his beloved 7mm-mag.
